Good Troubles covers a wide range of American music. Instead of just jazz standards there are a number of original tunes including two pop-influenced vocal ballads with strings, a song that alternates meditative moods with energetic free jazz, songs with some really up-tempo scat singing, and Latin versions of standards such as Summertime and Recordame. Of particular note among the originals are Asturian Nights, by Lex Valk, which with its haunting melody, is reminiscent of the classical work Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. Robert Sanders’ Midtown Manhattan is a portrait of a Manhattan street intersection, portraying the alternation of calm and chaos when Manhattan traffic lights change. Nelson Mills’ song Good Troubles, the title tune of the album, was written while he and wife Gloria Edwards performed in Singapore, a gig whose blessings were mixed. Nelson Mills’ other originals take us in a different direction, broadening the musical palette with the pop and R&B flavored songs Night Softness and Foundation
