The COALITION Band actually began in Philadelphia with an LP release entitled, "Birth". The record featured Dwight James on drums, Mike Falcone on saxes and flute, Bill Collins on bass and vocals, and Tony Branco on piano. After a move to the west coast, Tony Branco re-formed COALITION in 1996 with their first CD release entitled, TRIBUTES. The CD featured Chris Hermes on acoustic and electric bass, Joe Thomasula on drums, Bucci Canencia on guitar, Marc Cunningham on clarinet, Jennifer Nam, vocalist, and Tony Branco piano, keyboards, and synth. The CD caught on in Europe, particularly with the jazz audiences in Italy and France. The follow-up COALITION CD release in 1999, STARWALK, saw a slight change in personnel with Joe Malone joining the group for a couple of cuts on drums.
