Born on January the 6th 1951 in Philippeville in Algeria, Jean-Paul Céléa, is a French jazz and contemporary music double-bassist.
Precocious musician, he starts at 5 to study classical violin at the Strasbourg conservatoire. In 1968 he decides to switch to double bass which he studies until 1973 at the Paris conservatoire. Still very young he joins the Strasbourg philharmonic orchestra then from 1973 to 1977 the prestigious Ensemble InterContemporain leaded at that time by his founder Pierre Boulez.
He chooses to dedicate to jazz and to musical free improvisation and joined Jacques Thollot’s quintet. There he meets François Jeanneau and pianist François Couturier, with whom he founds a duo which will be the start of a long collaboration between the two artists. Then he worked with numerous musicians such as Daniel Humair, Michel Portal, Didier Lockwood, Aldo Romano ou Jean-Louis Chautemps.
