Saxophonist and clarinetist Sebastien Texier is a key figure in his father Henri's cinematic world-jazz journeys with the Strada Sextet and Red Route Quartet. And the jazz world has noticed the ease with which the younger Texier crosses the territories of Ornette Coleman-like freebop and uninhibited improv. This highly varied set is the recording debut for his powerful new trio, with Claude Tchamitchian on bass and Sean Carpio on drums – and Henri as a guest on three tracks. Followers of the latter's recent work will hear plenty of connections with this venture. Lilian's Tears, with its gentle sax dance over a bass pattern, opens the show lyrically. But Pain de Singe, for honking clarinet and battering percussion, soon disrupts it, before Texier stretches out into cruising swing later in the same tune. The two basses converse (Tchamitchian slippery, Texier Snr firm) on the lilting Redman, and Hyena's Night passes
