In 1975 in Marl, Thomas MIEBS, Rainer DAEDELOW (bassist later replaced by Udo FUELLHAAS), Gerd GITZA and Rudiger FREITAG were a a part of a short-lived band called TORAGERU. The band suffered a major loss when Gerd GITZA lost his life in a car accident around the same time and his place as a guitarist would be taken over by Herbert KLINGER, a long-time friend of FUELLHAAS. As this events occured, the band changed their name to SURGERY in September 1976, and soon they were joined by sax placer Udo CUSTODIS from the group JOIN IN. During their early years they took part three times in a band contest Vest-Rock where they represented their juridiscal district Marl where they were judged along side symphonic bands like TRILOGY and ROSSEAU, which resulted in winning the first place in the contest of 1978.
