New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 6th December 2024

by Matt Groom

As we head into December the new releases have slowed down out somewhat, but there are still plenty of gems to found. Orchestre Incandescent, led by flautist Sylvaine Hélary, blends contemporary jazz with Baroque influences, creating a rich, improvisational soundscape inspired by poetry on Rare Birds, while Rasmus Sørensen’s At the Right Time solidifies his voice in modern jazz with intricate compositions and a dynamic trio. Freddie Roach’s Good Move (1963) receives a deluxe reissue in Blue Note's Tone Poet series with audiophile-quality sound, and a newly discovered 1970 Bill Evans Trio concert from the Kongsberg Jazz Festival, remastered from original reels, adds a rare gem to Evans’ legacy. And The Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency! (1969) is a landmark jazz fusion album of explosive energy, returning to vinyl and fully retaining its unsetlling power 50 years on.

Rare Birds

Orchestre Incandescent & Sylvaine Helary

Orchestre Incandescent, led by flautist Sylvaine Hélary, blends contemporary jazz with Baroque influences. Inspired by poetry, the ensemble combines rich textures, improvisation, and diverse instrumentation, creating a surprising and imaginative musical universe enriched by Hélary's visionary direction.

Available Format: CD

At the Right Time

Rasmus Sorensen

Danish pianist Rasmus Sørensen’s At the Right Time cements his status as a leading contemporary jazz voice. Influenced by Fred Hersch, Brad Mehldau, and Vijay Iyer, the album features 12 original compositions. With Jon Henriksson's resonant bass and Francesco Ciniglio's dynamic drumming, the trio balances precision, warmth, and rhythmic exploration.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Good Move

Freddie Roach

Freddie Roach’s Good Move (1963), a soul jazz classic with Blue Mitchell and Hank Mobley, gets a deluxe reissue through Blue Note’s Tone Poet Series. Mastered from original analog tapes, the 180g vinyl offers exceptional audiophile quality, curated by Joe Harley and inspired by Music Matters’ reissue excellence.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

This first-time release of a 1970 Bill Evans Trio concert from the Kongsberg Jazz Festival features Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell. Remastered from original stereo reels, the deluxe CD includes a booklet with essays and rare photos, showcasing a remarkable addition to Evans’ legacy in stunning sound quality.

Available Format: CD

Emergency!

Tony Williams Lifetime

The Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency! (1969) revolutionized jazz fusion with its explosive energy. Featuring John McLaughlin on guitar and Larry Young on organ, the album blends fiery rock intensity with free-form jazz improvisation. Williams’ groundbreaking drumming and bold compositions make this an electrifying cornerstone of the darker side of fusion. Long out-of-print on vinyl, Emergency! makes a welcome return, and still sounds stunning over 50 years later.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records
