Memphis homeboys, the Bar-Kays, performed at the Overton Park Shell on Friday night October 18. These outdoor concerts at the Shell are a great way to see live music, and all of the shows are free. It's an excellent setting as a curved hill provides a natural amphitheater and large trees add ample cooling shade.

The Bar-Kays have been performing since the 60s, and they still have one original member on board, bassist James Alexander, who still provides some mighty thump to the band. The band is known for their irresistible funk dance grooves and they did not disappoint. A large portion of the audience got on their feet and came down in front of the stage for some non-stop dancing.

The band played a lot of their hits including "Soul Finger" from the 60s, and "Shake Your Rump to the Funk" from the 70s. They also played a lot of songs that are not credited to the band, but the band did record these numbers while serving as the Staxx label house band and backing up other artists. This included the "Theme from Shaft", and a mega medley of well known Staxx hits by bands like Sam and Dave. Everyone had a great time, good vibes were shared with everyone.
