Ghent Jazz set for longest edition yet

Ghent kicks off its annual jazz festival on Friday with a mainstage and garden stage at the Bijloke site. The city's longest edition yet will dazzle audiences with 13 concert days and more than 40 Belgian artists in the massive international lineup.
The opening act of Gent Jazz's 23rd edition is Canadian jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall. Performances to follow include names such as Norah Jones, Brad Mehldau, Jamie Cullum, Bill Frisell and Joshua Redman.

It is the second edition of Greenhouse Talent after the concert organiser took over the festival at the beginning of 2023. Spokeswoman Liesbeth Rubben is in favour of the newly extended festival dates, saying the company can spread the production costs over more days. "We are also happy that we can spoil people with music for even longer. In addition, the tent has become more compact, but we have also noticed that the construction is being done more efficiently, which reduces the impact on the site.”
According to Greenhouse Talent, the performance by Anohni and the Johnsons on Saturday is not to be missed. “It is their first performance in fifteen years in Belgium and also the only one in the Benelux, so we are quite proud that they chose Ghent," the organisers say. Born in the UK and raised in Amsterdam and California, Anohni relocated to New York City in her late teens, forming her group, the Johnsons, in 1998 with a focus on animist and eco-feminist themes. The group's genres span from electronic experimental to avant-classical, dance and soul.
In addition to the top international performers, the organisers have programmed established Belgian names such as Amatorski, Gabriel Rios, Johannes Is His Name, Zap Mama and Melanie De Biasio.

“We also give a lot of opportunities to young bands," Greenhouse Talent says. For example, there will be the Young Jazz Talent competition on 11 July. The winner will receive a place on next year's bill and a performance at Ha Concerts, the former Ghent Trade Fair. “Last year, the winner was Aki, and he will therefore be able to perform on the main stage on 11 July this year.”
“For us, these collaborations are important to focus on the growth of young, home-grown artists. This year there will be more than 40 Belgian artists on stage. We are proud of that mix with international top players," Rubbens concludes.
Several concerts are sold out, tickets are still available for other performances between 5 and 20 July. Every day the artists can be seen on two stages: the main stage in the tent and the garden stage in the open air.
