Brenda Earle Stokes' Motherhood is a collection of 10 original songs that deal with the laughter, the frustration, the joy and the tears of motherhood. Deeply rooted in traditional and jazz styles, the album features Grammy winning fellow Canadian mother Ingrid Jensen on trumpet.
The music was composed during a 9 day residency in Banff back in November 2019 and was meant to be recording it in spring of 2020. We definitely know how that story went…
The songs explore the "real life" experience of modern mothering, exploring joy, fear, identity, change, invisible labor, gender roles, friendship, frustration and hilarity. Written in the jazz/contemporary jazz language with influences from lyric-forward singer-songwriters and music theater, Motherhood is the highly-anticipated new release from Brenda Earle Stokes.
