I can't say it better than what this article writes. One of the most prominent prolific and proficional drummers of Europe jazz scene, perhaps also even the world of jazz.
"He rose to prominence as part of a cadre of insightful young Norwegian improvisers that included saxophonist Jan Garbarek, guitarist Terje Rypdal and bassist Arild Andersen. As a foursome under Garbarek’s leadership, they recorded one of the earliest releases on ECM, Afric Pepperbird (1970)." "Among American listeners especially, his most prominent affiliation from this period was with pianist Keith Jarrett, who formed a quartet featuring Garbarek, Christensen and the Swedish bassist Palle Danielsson. The first album by this group was Belonging, in 1974; thereafter the band was commonly known as Jarrett’s Belonging Quartet." https://www.wbgo.org/post/jon-christensen-inspired-norwegian-drummer-heard-dozens-ecm-albums-dead-76#stream/0 Edited by Asmodean - 18 Feb 2020 at 4:02pm |

Sad news - one of my very favorite drummers. He truly was the "house drummer" for ECM from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Here's 12 of his very best performances, including one "non-ECM":
1) Enrico Rava The Plot, 1977 2) Jan Garbarek/Bobo Stenson Witchi-Tai-To, 1974 3) Keith Jarrett Belonging, 1974 4) Eberhard Weber Yellow Fields, 1976 5) Ralph Towner Solstice, 1975 6) Terje Rypdal What comes after, 1974 7) Mike Nock Ondas, 1982 8) Miroslav Vitous Group, 1981 9) Masqualero Aero, 1988 10) Jan Garbarek Photo with..., 1979 11) Ralph Towner Sound and Shadows, 1977 12) Tomasz Stanko Bluish, 1992. |
