American jazz legend Marshall Allen has shared plans for his debut solo album.
For a long time Sun Ra’s second-in-command, and tasked with leading the Arkestra into the 21st century, Marshall Allen is a singular figure in freedom music. Recently toasting his 100th birthday, the jazz musician has now laid out plans for his debut solo release.
Out on February 14th, ‘New Dawn’ was constructed in collaboration with Knoel Scott, two pioneering Arkestra figures who have built a life-long friendship.
“Knoel’s energy became the driving force behind the project,” notes ‘New Dawn’ producer Jan Lankisch. “He knew Marshall better than anyone, and his deep understanding of Marshall’s compositions guided the selection of material for the album.”
The studio sessions utilised some of the best improvisatory musicians in Philadelphia’s incredible jazz scene, with a host of Arkestra veterans taking part – including Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks (trumpet), Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass), Bruce Edwards (guitar), and George Gray (drums) amongst other players.
The title track ‘New Dawn’ is out now – a riveting piece of music that utilises an incredible vocal from Neneh Cherry.
Tune in now.
