I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again ...

Ah, I can see that about Benson, steering clear of that scene. Sure, it'd be great to play with Miles etc but if you don't like the lifestyle, you won't be happy etc etc etc I agree Sean, that's why it strikes me as an interesting pairing - such difference between the two |

I can see that, as coming from EST and Bill, Dave etc. It's kinda one hell of a rich-sounding album too, and 'heavy' I find a fitting word, it is at that. What's your top Miles album, idlero?
I end up reaching for BB when I'm after electric too - but also for a bit of darkness I guess! |

Looks like In A Silent Way got bumped down a few notches. Kind of Blue is now #1. I wonder what happened?

Well stylistically speaking, Benson's early CTI albums are millions of miles away from BB or OnThe Corner
But would Benson have covered such drug-induced Jeff Air tracks like White Rabbit
And I'm definitely not convince his So What reprise did a lot of good to the original KOB version.

my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicted musicians to crazy ones....

I have heard that Benson didn't care for the lifestyle and drug use. Benson tends to be a clean religious man.

There might be really some trial and error before McLaughlin joined it. Benson does not really do the performance that exploded very much. As for it, Benson seems to be looking for the place to stay of own definitely. However, as a result, "In The Sky" may have a certain experimental element. And I feel that the performance that does not harmonize acts well.

Good point, Mike.I also often wonder whether Benson and Miles could have done more together, or whether their styles don't seem like a natural fit? Actually no, rather, that some aspects of their respective styles weren't a fit?

I love Miles In The Sky. Thing is, aside from the first track which is a nice slice of early fusion, and the inclusion of guitarist George Benson on track 2, it's still more or less the avant-garde post-bop of his second great quintet on tracks 2, 3, and 4. Filles... is half post-bop and half fusion, and then In A Silent Way is Miles going full force into fusion, albeit on the mellower side. It wouldn't be until the following album Bitches Brew where Miles' exploration of fusion exploded. |

If i'm honest I"d like to see a little more diversity in the top 5 (maybe some monk or Duke), bbut can't really complain about MD in a jazz top 5

I think Miles to have always found new music. And it is a fact to have recognized the musician such as Jimi and Sly equally. Probably he would take all in. Album art of In The Sky. As for the contest by George Benson and Keith Jarrett likewise. It would be thrown all open by the filter which lasted of Miles.
