As much as I love Mingus, and his compositional powers are pretty hefty, I voted RC for his versatility perhaps. And also a little because I felt like he was missing out with 0 votes at one stage

Graham Collier (only him can rival to Mingus)
This kind of pôll is fairly unfair, IMHO
How can one put Mingus (who's in a class of his own, especially in the composition dept) compared to two accompanying bassists like Cartyer and Holland... don't get me wrong, Ron & Dave were quite good and even made a few "solo" or leader albums that are worthy.... But nothing of the stature of Mingus

my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicted musicians to crazy ones....

All three are different and each has lot of great moments. Like early Holland's works for experimentation, but best Mingus albums are real masterpieces

I went to Mingus. His contribution was grand. I checked "Jazz at Massey Hall" again recently accidentally.

Carter is probably the best bassist of the three, but I voted for Mingus for all-around greatness.

C/P'd from the PA Shred...stands even with Ron added in. I just absolutely love the soul and swing of Mingus. The other two have played on/recorded some absolutely phenomenal albums as well, and of course they both play one of teh best instruments ever but Mingus is THE MAN. |
