2019 in general was quite a busy year for jazz community with lot of activities, plenty of new releases but it didn't bring many masterpieces. With many better-than-average albums released, there are some which could be more interesting than others. Few of them unsurprisingly came from still burgeoning English jazz scene: The Comet Is Coming - The Afterlife (EP) SEED Ensemble - Driftglass Ruby Rushton - Ironside Jazz veterans offered few strong albums as well: Art Ensemble Of Chicago - We Are On The Edge Chick Corea Spanish Heart Band - Antidote William Parker - Live/Shape Shifter Modern creative jazz continues to impress: Whit Dickey - Peace Planet & Box Of Light Steve Lehman - The People I Love Matt Mitchell - Phalanx Ambassador Quite a big pleasant surprise was a new Allison Miller album, successful continuation of classic fusion tradition transferred on today's ground: Allison Miller - Glitter Wolf From mainstream jazz side, Joshua Redman offered strong work: Joshua Redman - Come What May From r'n'b scene, I was really impressed by The Rolling Stones' back-vocalist solo work, deeply reworking Stone's songs: Bernard Fowler - Inside Out And - I want to mention Matana Roberts who continues releasing albums in a class of her own. Some will like it, others - not too much, but she has her own voice that's for sure Edited by snobb - 15 Jan 2020 at 6:36am |
