Navalny ally Leonid Volkov vows to continue fight against Putin after hammer attack in Vilnius

Vilniuje užpultas ir žiauriai sužalotas A.Navalno ...

‘We will not give up,’ Volkov says in video after being discharged from hospital following attack in Lithuania that left him covered in blood

Leonid Volkov, a longtime aide to the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has vowed to continue the struggle against Russian President Vladimir Putin after being attacked with a hammer outside his home in Lithuania.

“We will work and we will not give up,” he said in a video clip posted on Telegram early on Wednesday, claiming that the attack that left him with a broken arm was a “characteristic bandit hello” from Putin’s henchmen.

Volkov, 43, was briefly hospitalised after the assault late on Tuesday, which sparked outrage from the Lithuanian government.

“The man attacked me in the yard, hit me on the leg about 15 times. The leg somehow is OK. It hurts to walk ... However, I broke my arm,” Volkov said in the Telegram post. “They literally wanted to make a schnitzel out of me.”

Volkov is one of Russia’s most prominent opposition figures and was a close confidant of Navalny, working as the late leader’s chief of staff and as chair of his Anti-Corruption Foundation until 2023.

Navalny spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh earlier said that “someone broke a car window and sprayed teargas in his [Volkov’s] eyes” before hitting him with a hammer.

The attack comes almost a month after the sudden death of Navalny in an Arctic prison, which Volkov and Navalny’s widow Yulia blamed directly on the Russian president.

The day before he was attacked, Volkov wrote on social media: “Putin killed Navalny. And many others before that”, echoing similar claims made by Navalny’s allies, as well as US president Joe Biden.

Hours before the attack Volkov also told independent Russian news outlet Meduza that he was worried for his safety after Navalny’s death. “The key risk now is that we will all be killed. Why, it’s a pretty obvious thing,” the outlet quoted him as saying.

Images published by the Navalny team after the attack showed Volkov’s face and legs covered in blood, while another photo showed a car with its window smashed.

Lithuanian police spokesperson Ramunas Matonis confirmed to the news agency AFP that a Russian citizen had been assaulted near his home in the capital, Vilnius, at around 10pm on Tuesday.

The suspects had not been identified and more details about the assault were expected on Wednesday morning, he said.

Lithuania’s foreign minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis, described the reported attack as “shocking”.

“News about Leonid’s assault are shocking. Relevant authorities are at work. Perpetrators will have to answer for their crime,” Landsbergis wrote on X.

Volkov had recently urged Russians to turn out in big numbers for an election day protest ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.

The incident marks the first attack on Navalny’s allies since they left Russia more than three years ago. Volkov and other key members of the Navalny team have lived in Lithuania since Russian authorities classified Navalny’s groups as “extremist” organisations in 2021. Most of Navalny’s closest allies are on Moscow’s wanted list and would face long-term prison sentences if they entered Russia.

Berlin police last year also opened an investigation into the suspected poisoning of two independent Russian journalists visiting the city for a conference organised by the Russian Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Press Release: 17 March 2023

Situation in Ukraine: ICC judges issue arrest warrants against Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova

Today, 17 March 2023, Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or “the Court”) issued warrants of arrest for two individuals in the context of the situation in Ukraine: Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Ms Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova.

Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, born on 7 October 1952, President of the Russian Federation, is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation (under articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute). The crimes were allegedly committed in Ukrainian occupied territory at least from 24 February 2022. There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes, (i) for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others (article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute), and (ii) for his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts, or allowed for their commission, and who were under his effective authority and control, pursuant to superior responsibility (article 28(b) of the Rome Statute).

Ms Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, born on 25 October 1984, Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the  President of the Russian Federation, is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation (under articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute). The crimes were allegedly committed in Ukrainian occupied territory at least from 24 February 2022. There are reasonable grounds to believe that Ms Lvova-Belova bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes, for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others (article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute).

Pre-Trial Chamber II considered, based on the Prosecution’s applications of 22 February 2023, that there are reasonable grounds to believe that each suspect bears responsibility for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population and that of unlawful transfer of population from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation, in prejudice of Ukrainian children.

The Chamber considered that the warrants are secret in order to protect victims and witnesses and also to safeguard the investigation. Nevertheless, mindful that the conduct addressed in the present situation is allegedly ongoing, and that the public awareness of the warrants may contribute to the prevention of the further commission of crimes, the Chamber considered that it is in the interests of justice to authorise the Registry to publicly disclose the existence of the warrants, the name of the suspects, the crimes for which the warrants are issued, and the modes of liability as established by the Chamber.

The abovementioned warrants of arrests were issued pursuant to the applications submitted by the Prosecution on 22 February 2023.

On March 6, a video of the shooting of an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war appeared on the Intenet. In the shocking footage, Shadura is hit by a hail of bullets after saying “Glory to Ukraine!” It is unknown where and when the video was shot.

On March 7, the command of the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade named the murder victim as Shadura. He had been missing since Feb. 3 after fighting in the Bakhmut area. The body of the soldier is currently in Russian-occupied territory. The final identification will be held after his return and examination, the brigade said.

The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets has sent a copy of the video of the Shadura’s murder to Ukraine’s international partners and ombudsman from different countries of the world as an example of yet another war crime by Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called the execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war “a terrible war crime” and more proof that the Russia’s war against Ukraine is genocide.

A criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the laws and customs of war) has been opened.

What Is the Russian Volunteer Corps? Hostages Reportedly Taken in Russia

The Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK)—a grouping of Russians fighting for Ukraine against Moscow's ongoing invasion of the country—on Thursday claimed to have undertaken a cross-border operation in which they attacked Russian military units.

Russian media claimed Thursday that a group of Ukrainian "saboteurs" had crossed the border into Bryansk Oblast, which borders Ukraine and Belarus, engaging in firefights, taking several people hostage, and inflicting civilian casualties.

Ukrainian officials quickly dismissed the reports as a Russian false flag. But the RDK then announced on its official Telegram channel that a group of its fighters had indeed crossed into Russia, though denied targeting any civilians or taking any hostages.

The Telegram post, which included a video of two armed men holding up an RDK flag in front of a Russian post box, declared that reports of hostage-taking or civilian casualties were "a lie of the Kremlin propagandists."

"The Russian Volunteer Corps came to the Bryansk region to show their compatriots that there is hope, that free Russian people with weapons in their hands can fight the regime," the post read, promising to upload further video footage of the operation.

Russian investigative news site iStories reported it had spoken to one of the RDK fighters who took part. The anonymous interviewee told the website a group of 45 fighters "went in, filmed, ambushed two BMPs [Russian-made fighting vehicles]."

"I didn't see any children," the fighter said. "But there was one injured border guard."

He said they hadn't take any hostages.

Newsweek has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry to request comment.

The RDK was formed in summer 2022 to help Kyiv fight against Russia's ongoing invasion. It does not release information about its fighting strength, and is believed to be largely made up of émigrés living in Ukraine hostile to the Kremlin.

This partially differentiates the RDK from other pro-Ukrainian Russian units like the Freedom of Russia Legion, which recruits Russian prisoners of war.

One RDK commander—named only as Denis—told Russia's Vot Tak TV in August 2022 that its soldiers are selected based on their political outlook, with the unit subscribing to right-wing ideology. Vot Tak said fighters have been known to use symbols of the World War II-era Russian Liberation Army, which collaborated with Nazi Germany and fought against the Soviet Union.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly summoned his Security Council after news of the cross-border operation broke and condemned the incident on television as a "terrorist attack."

Mark Voyger, a former special adviser for Russian and Eurasian affairs to then-commander of U.S. Army Europe, General Ben Hodges, told Newsweek he expected the Kremlin to leverage the situation to expand its war, regardless of whether the operation proved legitimate or a false flag.

"I would be shocked if they don't use this one way or another to again tighten the screws," Voyger—now a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for European Analysis and a professor at the American University of Kyiv—said.

"If it is actually a real attack by such a unit, obviously it comes from Ukraine. And so now, the Kremlin actually doesn't have to invent anything," Voyger added, referring to false flags.

"Actually, it becomes more of an existential threat for the regime, because it will be a genuine attack by a real anti-Kremlin force originating from Ukraine," he said.

With the attack having occurred so close to the border of Belarus, Voyger added, Putin may use the incident to further pressure Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to join the war.

ONE YEAR AGO russians STARTED THE WAR AGAINST THE UKRAINE

32 years ago we already had russian tanks in the streets of my hometown killing civils, if we wouldn't stop them in Ukraine, they will come again to Vilnius, Warsaw, Berlin, Paris, to your hometown killing again

we send Ukrainians arms, less than they need, but  as much as we can, they send us back burned russian tanks to show they use our arms properly (burned russian tank, delivered from Ukraine to Vilnius, is placed on city's main square):

Lithuanians on Feb. 3 donated over 1 million euros during just one hour to purchase multifunctional tactical radars for Ukraine as part of the Radarom! fundraising campaign, Andrius Tapinas, the founder of Lithuania's Laisves TV, said on Facebook.

He said that the total amount donated this morning to Radarom! would be doubled by the Tesonet business accelerator to over 2 million euros.

The Radarom! campaign started Jan. 30, and since then more than 5 million euros have been donated to supply Ukraine with tactical radars.

Tapinas said that he expected the total amount of the donations to double by Feb. 24, the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Let’s Radar – Lithuania launches biggest action to support Ukraine

A year ago, we were all shaken by the news that a war broke out in Ukraine. A war that not only has affected Ukrainians, but also changed our lives in entire Europe. It has also been a time of extraordinary unity, and as we approach the anniversary of the war, LRT, along with Blue/Yellow, Laisvės TV, 1K Fondas and Stiprūs Kartu, are launching the biggest action in support of Ukraine – Let’s Radar/Radarom!

The campaign, which runs from January 30 to February 24, is inviting donations for one cause – air surveillance radars to protect Ukraine’s skies and to react faster and more accurately to enemy attacks.

“Radars are there to monitor the airspace. These new radars from Israel are unique in that they can detect all types, sizes, and speeds of objects moving in the sky. Conventional radars are not designed to track small and low-flying objects. Russian missiles and drones pose a lethal threat to Ukrainian defenders and civilians. These radars will go a long way in preventing Russian death squads,” says John Ohman, founder of Blue/Yellow.

Let’s Radar! campaign expects to raise 5 million euros to buy radars for Ukraine. The first advanced surveillance equipment is expected to reach Ukraine at the start of the campaign.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the biggest campaign for war-torn Ukraine can do so by calling 1482 for a donation of 5 euros. You can also make a donation by visiting the special website radarom.lt, where you can make a bank transfer.

“We have already proven that we can not only welcome those in need, but even help them to purchase security equipment such as the Bayraktar military drone. So we invite you to unite once again and help Ukraine protect itself from the enemy’s infrastructure-destroying attacks and to win the fight for our all freedom,” says Andrius Tapinas, founder of the online television channel Laisvės TV, and host of the programme.

“Let’s make this year the year the war in Ukraine ends. Every donation is important. One, two, three, four euros – everything works for the common victory. Every civilian counts. Every soldier matters. Every euro matters. We are doing our best,” says Oleg Šurajev, the head of the 1K Fondas.

Business organisations are invited to actively join the campaign, as some already have. LRT and the organisations providing aid to Ukraine are grateful for the support of businesses, and a special page on radarom.lt lists all the contributors.

“A nation at war does not get tired, so why should we? As President Volodymyr Zelensky said to me, if you feel tired, think of the soldiers at the front and the innocent Ukrainians who are dying. This initiative will help protect the Ukrainian people from Russian terror, so everyone’s contribution is very important. I know that the people of our country will continue their mission of aid until victory. I particularly invite the Lithuanian business community to join in and show that freedom is the most important value. Let’s help freedom prevail,” says Edmundas Jakilaitis, the initiator of the campaign Stiprūs Kartu.

Everyone is invited to join Let’s Radar/Radarom! by donating and spreading the message. For more information and to download materials prepared especially for the campaign, which can be used on social networks, please visit radarom.lt.

The campaign will run for four weeks and will culminate in a special broadcast on LRT TV, LRT RADIO and LRT.lt throughout February 24. In the evening, LRT TV will broadcast a final concert to support Ukraine.

Donations can be made by calling 1482 (EUR 5) and on radarom.lt.

Russia fired more than 20 cruise missiles at targets in Ukraine on Saturday, killing at least one person in the capital Kyiv and injuring more than a dozen in what one official described as “terror on New Year’s Eve.”

Moscow’s second major missile attack in three days badly damaged a hotel south of Kyiv’s center and a residential building in another district. A Japanese journalist was among the wounded and taken to hospital, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Russia has been attacking vital infrastructure in Ukraine since October with barrages of missiles and drones, causing sweeping power blackouts and other outages for millions of people as the cold weather bites.

“This time, Russia’s mass missile attack is deliberately targeting residential areas, not even our energy infrastructure,” Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter after the attack.

“War criminal Putin ‘celebrates’ New Year by killing people,” Kuleba said, calling for Russia to be deprived of its permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

This article explains how the aid that the US is providing to Ukraine is not as expensive as it may sound, and in the cold logistics of war, it is money not going to waste.
Helping people in dire need is reason enough for many, but for others, this article provides another way to see things.

These anti-draft protests in Dagestan and Yakutsk are old news now, but it begs the question, why aren't there more protests given how unpopular the draft has been. We will look at a possible answer in the next post.

Two killed in explosion in Polish village near Ukraine border

Two people died Tuesday afternoon after a projectile struck an area where grain was drying in Przewodów, a Polish village near the border with Ukraine, domestic media reported.
