I felt I covered his albums pretty well. I even second guessed some of the tags and changed them
The reason he cant be defaulted to Post-Fusion Contemporary is because not all his albums are like that. Some are world music mixed with jazz, some are actually classic fusion. The first 2 Pat Metheny Group albums came out in the late 70s, and they have that feel to them, though a tad bit lighter than your usual 70s fusion album. I think many here have heard The Way Up, and, even though it was released in 2005, most would agree it's a modern take on classic fusion with some more progressive elements. It's more "jazz" than the previous 3 PMG albums. |

As far as your mention of problems on larger busier sites. I think the best solution would be to reduce the number of teams without reducing the genres and give certain knowledgeable hard working people the power to work with more than one genre at a time.
For instance a small 2 or 3 man team that over saw many related genres instead of a different team for each genre. That would definitely speed things up, especially if said team was on the job almost every day.

Oh I didn't think you were challenging his choices, I was just explaining how the tags got there.
Methany is definitely one that is hard to classify. I know I didn't want to deal with him, I'm glad Mike did.

It wasn't my intention to challenge his choices.... just a suggestion, no more.
If you know my thoughts about genre tagging , definitions and team specialist (i'm one of them) and the ProgArchives silly situation...
uuuuh, wait.... no comments!!!!....

Depends on the individual album, the music on it and when it came out. Mike is our Methany expert and he tagged all of his albums, so I trust he did a good job.
There will always be albums that are sort of between genres, we just let one of the collabs make that choice and then the rest of us just back off and don't continuosly nitpick their decision. As far as the albums in question in your quote, Mike ended up finding a resource where he could listen to the albums and make a choice for himself without asking others. From what I remember about a lot of Methany, many of his albums fall right between Classic Fusion, Post Fusion Contemporary and World Fusion. The reason why the Post Fusion Contemporary looks like a best of ECM in the 80s list has to do with the current taste of the small number of people whio have voted so far. If you check the list of Contemp artists, you'll see there are also a lot of non-ECM artists who play a sort of smooth jazz-fusion mix, like some Hiromi albums for example.

Actually, of what I know of Metheny (heard someting like 10 albums)....
and seeing the albums that top the Post Fusion Contemporary section.... (basically it looks like 80's ECM label best-of list)
Soooooooo, I'd put PFC as the default genre for Metheny.
I mean that it definitely looks more appropriate to have Metheny alongside Garbarek, Scoffield and Jarrett than alongside Mahavishnu, WE, RTF, Miles and Mwandishi, right???
Same thing for Rypdal, really (and in some extant Tibbets)
But that's just my perception of things, though

Pat Metheny seems to announce a new album soon. If it is put on the market, people can add the album.

True. I agree, I do have a lot of his albums, so I could at least use the comments as guidelines, but taken with a grain of salt.
This whole thing really started because I wasn't sure how to categorize Bright Size Life. |

Gotchya, I appreciate your efforts, I'm just saying in a borderline case, he goes in Classic Fusion, someone with more of his albums will be along shortly, but new people to the site usually don't get what Post Fusion Contemporary is right away.
Make sure if you get advice from someone, its someone who understands the genres.

Which one don't you have? non-PMG albums?
Classic Fusion does not really work for a lot of his albums, he's all over the place with World Fusion, Post-Bop, etc.. |

I don't own any of those Methany albums, but his basic default tag is Classic Fusion.

I'm going through Pat Metheny's discography, and I'm updating all his albums. I added the Pat Metheny Group albums a little while back, but now I'd like to finish updating his page. However, though I have a lot of Metheny albums, I don't have everything, nor am I sure of all the genre tags for his albums. I was hoping some of you guys could help out. I'm just looking to see what genre tag everyone feels his albums should have.
For example, I'm not sure if his first album Bright Size Life (feat. Jaco) should be left as "Classic Fusion" or maybe Post-Fusion Contemporary, or Post-Bop. So just comment with the albums you know and what you think the appropriate genre tag should be. I will then update all the albums with the right tag. NO PAT METHENY GROUP ALBUMS (PMG). They are all done. Note: I didn't put this in the collabs section, as I want as many opinions as possible. |
