New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 14th March 2025

by Maddy Allison

New releases from around the world this week! Traditional Sufi devotional music from Rizwan-Muazzam Qawalli, who follow in the footsteps of their uncle (Islamic singing icon Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) in At The Feet Of The Beloved, and New York bassist Steve Millhouse releases his new trio album Looking Back To Today with SteepleChase Records. New ensemble lineups from both Nels Cline in Consentrik Quartet, as well as drummer Snorre Kirk in What A Day! Nicolas Masson looks to freer jazz influences in Renaissance and hailing from South Korea but based in Amsterdam, Sun-Mi Hong reflects on her journey to her new home in Fourth Page: Meaning of a Nest.

Continuing their uncle’s legacy in spreading the joys of Qawwali, the sibling duo Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali celebrate the Sufi devotional music of Pakistan and India. The transcendent music is full of repeated vocal lines, improvisations, and traditional instrumental backings, all encouraging an immersive listening experience centred around spiritualism and connection.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

From the stages of Broadway to global touring, Steve Millhouse boasts a full career of bass playing. Here, he reunites with long-time collaborators Rich Perry (tenor saxophone) and Eric Halvorson (drums) for their new trio album Looking Back To Today, released with SteepleChase. A mixture of originals by Millhouse and well-known jazz composers, this new album takes a refreshing take on trio jazz.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Releasing his fourth album with the Blue Note label, guitarist Nels Cline assembles a new line-up that features saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, Chris Lightcap on bass and Tom Rainey on drums in an album fuelled by an appetite for improvised music. Cline is responsible for all twelve original songs, varied and diverse pieces designed to groove and swing.

Available Format: CD

Scandinavian drummer Snorre Kirk produces his next album that’s been in the making for over 5 years, after he was inspired by the sounds of ensemble member and London clarinettist Giacomo Smith. Kirk’s first release with a brand new line-up of players is sure to bring the swing, each tune sounding fresh and melodic and showcases Kirk’s talent for composition as well as his drumming.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Saxophonist Nicolas Masson produces his second album with ECM alongside long-term companions and collaborators Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret and Lionel Friedli, in their new quartet album Renaissance. Centred around freer jazz forms, Masson focuses on ensemble interaction rather than the structure of composition and writing, and the result is Masson embarking on a personal sense of musical revival – his own ‘renaissance’

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Amsterdam-based drummer Sun-Mi Hong delivers her second album with Edition Records, Fourth Page: Meaning of a Nest. With themes of travel and a sense of belonging inspired by Hong’s own journey from South Korea to Amsterdam, the album is full of inventive improvisation and emotional depth. Hong crafts structured and expressive pieces, all whilst allowing the breadth of her ensemble to shine to its fullest.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV
