Shelly Berg named artistic director of series

By Carolina Worrell

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County has announced the lineup for the Jazz Roots 2016-2017 season, which will take place in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. Additionally, University of Miami’s Frost School of Music Dean Shelly Berg has been named artistic director of the series following the death of Jazz Roots co-founder and co-creator Larry Rosen. Grammy-nominated Berg is a world-renowned musician, composer and educator who has been involved with Jazz Roots since its start.

Commissioned especially for the 10th anniversary of the Arsht Center, the ninth season of Jazz Roots will launch on Nov. 4 with an all-star tribute to Rosen and continue with five diverse concerts including the Dave Koz Christmas Tour 2016 with special guests Jonathan Butler, Kenny Lattimore and Valerie Simpson on Nov. 26; the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on Jan. 20; "Piano Titans: Chick Corea and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Solos and Duets," on Feb. 24; "Living Legends: Branford Marsalis Quartet with special guest Kurt Elling," on March 17; and "From Ma Rainey to Miles Davis: A Blues Journey," starring Steve Miller and Jimmie Vaughan, on April 7.

Subscription rates for the series range from $190 to $760; more information can be found by calling 305-949-6722 or online at arshtcenter.org/jazz.
