Album of the Year Prize for Tord Gustavsen, Simin Tander and Jarle Vespestad

Tord Gustavsen, Simin Tander and Jarle Vespestad have won the German Record Critics’ Album of the Year prize – Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik – for their album What was said.

From the jury’s statement: “When Norwegian musicians Tord Gustavsen and Jarle Vespestad got together with Cologne-based singer Simin Tander, dreamlike art songs were created, songs that are nestled between so-called serious music, jazz, world music, and folk - and are, at the same time, far from all of these. The slightly melancholic voice of Simin, the restrained piano playing, synthesizer bass and discreet electronics from Gustavsen, as well as the sparse percussion and drum pulses from Vespestad, create an atmosphere beyond the usual genre boundaries. (…) Tander sings in English and Pashto, translating European and American texts into the mother tongue of her Afghan father, and interpreting texts of the Persian Sufi poet Jalal al-Din Rumi: essential human feelings are not limited to regions of origin or residency. Rich in pauses and resonant tones, this music, mostly open and delicate, is condensed and forceful at decisive points.”

The German Record Critics' Award ("Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik") was established in 1980 to set the "most rigorous standards for supreme achievement and quality" in the field of music recording. The German Record Critics' Award Association consists of music critics, writers, musicologists and editors in Germany, Austria and Switzerland actively involved in the assessment of CDs and DVDs. Its mission is to provide producers, composers, artists and music lovers with an honest guide to new releases of real artistic significance.

Our congratulations to Tord, Simin and Jarle!
