I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again ...

A couple more!
You'd probably know it already - but maybe Emergency by Tony Williams, featuring Larry Young and John McLaughlin. Fairly aggressive but not drums, piano and bass of course, organ drums & guitar Also these guys have some ace albums: http://www.jazzmusicarchives.com/medeski-martin-and-wood.aspx?ac=Medeski%20Martin or Brad Mehldau maybe, who I only recently came across http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR8iiDEF4ek does some interesting covers too Ashley |

Anything by Esbjörn Svensson Trio. You won't go wrong with Tuesday Wonderland, Live in Hamburg or Viaticum.

That's Kenny G with Miles Davis on my avatar, by the way. |

Hi,
Not sure I should not be adding anything that has Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke ... and some of those pieces are not only heavy, but quite weightless ...

I also second Now He Sings Now He Sobs, an excellent piano driven album

My pleasure! Will keep thinking. Perhaps Hiromi Uehara? Though you might know her from PA? |

Oscar Peterson, although his work is not avant, is much more bop. Nevertheless, he had a great bass player, I can't remember his last name, but the first was Niels

By definitiion, bass and piano are 2/3 of the ensemble. |

Thanks for the suggestions!
Roberts, that was a great suggestion. The song Minority captured my attention instantly. Perfect. Do you know anything like this but more upbeat? Edited by Horizons - 24 Jul 2011 at 12:06am |

Hey Horizons!
Perhaps Bill Evans in a trio setting, piano, drums and bass. My fav of his is 'Everybody Digs Bill Evans' which was recorded just before he did Kind of Blue with Davis, so it's more of a cool sound with some harder bop and not avant, so it might not be quite what you're after. I'll keep working on a suggestion (and i bet someone else here will come through for you while I'm still thinking!) EDIT: Like Kazuhiro! Edited by dreadpirateroberts - 23 Jul 2011 at 9:46pm |
