Shabaka and The Ancestors announce their second album

Saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings has announced that his group Shabaka and the Ancestors will make their debut on the Impulse! record label this March with their second studio album titled We Are Sent Here By History

The British jazz star, who’s won four Jazz FM Awards and is a key member of The Comet is Coming and Sons of Kemet, says this new project is “conceptualized as an album-long sonic poem examining the present and future”. With their breakout 2016 album, Wisdom of Elders, Shabaka & The Ancestors were established as a sudden force in spiritual jazz.

Recorded in Cape Town, the album explores African and Afro-Caribbean traditions with guest vocalist and performance artist Siyabonga Mthembu who composed lyrics for Shabaka to craft his music and poetry around.

The album is released on March 13th with a series of live UK dates at the beginning of May, including a performance at Propaganda: A weekend curated by Shabaka Hutchings on Sunday 10th May at Barbican Centre. Tickets are available from here.

Guitar legend Al Di Meola pays tribute to The Beatles

American jazz guitar legend Al Di Meola has announced a new album entitled ‘Across The Universe - The Beatles Vol.2’: a sophomore studio recording in tribute to The Beatles.

The album follows on from his 2013 studio recording, 'All Your Life: A Tribute to the Beatles'. His latest album adds to his vast recording collection, having released more than 30 solo albums, as well as his acclaimed collaborations with music legends including Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and Stanley Clarke.

The Grammy-winning star says he was inspired by the fab four from an early age, and here he has the opportunity to share favourite songs with what he says is “complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and intricate harmonies” - including Here ‘Comes the Sun’, ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Yesterday’.

The first single ‘Strawberry Fields’ is out this week with the rest of the album to follow on March 13th.

Chris Standring, “Is There a Doctor in the House?”

Contemporary jazz guitarist Chris Standring released “Is There a Doctor in the House?,” the first single from his forthcoming album, Real Life. This joyous song is aptly accompanied by a cheerful and charming video shot in sunny Santa Monica. Real Life is Standring’s 13th solo album; it is due out March 20 via Ultimate Vibe and promises to be one of his most effervescent records yet. “Real Life suggests a world we need to embrace without shoving things under the carpet,” the British-born musician says about the theme of the album. “This is real. Life is no rehearsal and this notion becomes ever more present the older I get. Carpe diem!”

Elsa Nilsson, “Hindsight”

Flutist/composer Elsa Nilsson’s upcoming album, Hindsight, is a direct reaction to the current political climate and reflects the urgency of her generation. Each of the pieces, including the title track presented here in a live version performed with her quartet, comes from the rhythmic structure of chants heard at Women’s Marches and is a riveting mix of rock, jazz improvisation and the compositional structure of classical music. Hindsight is due out on February 27 via Bumble Bee Collective, and each of its tracks will have an accompanying video created by an artist who has been adversely affected by the current political climate.

Kathleen Grace with Larry Goldings, “Where or When”

Singer/songwriter Kathleen Grace will release Tie Me To You, a duo album with Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Larry Goldings, on April 17 via Monsoon. The album finds them performing originals and covers, including this whimsical cover of the 1937 Rodgers and Hart classic, “Where or When,” featuring Goldings on a pocket piano – an electronic instrument played in real-time. “Larry was remarkable to work with, deeply trusting and intuitive,” says Grace via a press release, “which I think helped me feel the same. We laughed so much and became a team over the year it took to finish the record. My gratitude to him is boundless.”

With the release of her 2018 Mack Avenue Music Group debut, Crime Zone, pianist/keyboardist Connie Han seized the attention of the jazz world and firmly established herself as a fast-rising star on the scene. That ascent continues on her captivating follow-up, Iron Starlet, due out April 10, 2020.

In the current edition of the Jazz In Europe Magazine (Winter 2020) we feature an in-depth article on Connie Han where she speaks about her journey in jazz, the new album and a great deal more.

As the title of her new release makes clear, Han’s career may be in the early stages of what promises to be a vertiginous climb, but the 23-year old is no wide-eyed aspirant, timidly searching for her place in the crowded jazz landscape. One listen to Iron Starlet is ample evidence that she’s every bit an armour-clad talent as the name implies. Her powerful vision takes in the full evolution of her forebearers, from iconic innovators like McCoy Tyner and Hank Jones through the Young Lion revolution spearheaded by the Marsalis Brothers, Kenny Kirkland and Jeff “Tain” Watts, among others.

“The intention of this music is to continue a legacy of tough, primal, raw but still intellectually engaging straight-ahead jazz,” Han declares. “I am an aspiring star in this music, but I am not a naïve, uncertain girl that people wrongly associate with that term.”

The toughness at the core of Iron Starlet is rooted in its rhythmic drive, anchored by the trio of Han, bassist Ivan Taylor and drummer/producer Bill Wysaske. They’re joined by the stellar frontline of saxophonist Walter Smith III (returning from Crime Zone) and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, an ideal pairing to realize the compelling blend of sophistication and grit that Han imbues into every piece.

Han and Wysaske have had a fruitful partnership for years with the two sharing strong opinions on ways in which to carry forward the lessons of the past while crafting music that is wholly alive to the moment. Their keyboard-drum partnership establishes the muscular rhythmic spine of their music which is elevated through their producer-artist collaboration.

“We subscribe to a philosophy of music that is driven by complex and sophisticated rhythm,” Han explains. “The rhythm isn’t hard just to be hard; it all comes from a place of pure human instinct.”

Han’s philosophy is perhaps best explained by listening to the title track of Iron Starlet, which opens the album. A blistering, percussive barrage lays the foundation for Pelt’s fire-breathing horn, which evokes the brawny eloquence of the great Freddie Hubbard. Han then takes over with a relentless solo, parrying Wysaske’s keen-edged thrusts with an unflagging energy that recalls the jaw-dropping chemistry of Kirkland and Watts when they burst onto the scene.

When discussing her new album, Connie Han is unafraid of using the word “tradition,” secure in the fact that she’s not a throwback but a fresh voice inheriting a legacy of powerful voices and raw power expressed through jazz. “This band can go from the blues to the esoteric,” she says. “But we always strive to bring out the darkness, grit and depth in this music as much as possible. Those are the elements that we’re inspired by and the values that we hold quite dear.”

Read our Interview with Connie Han in the Winter 2020 edition of the Jazz In Europe Magazine. An abridged version of the interview can be read here on the Jazz In Europe Website.

Laila Biali, “Take Me to the Alley” (VIDEO PREMIERE)

Vocalist/pianist Laila Biali’s forthcoming album, Out of Dust, will be released on March 27 via Chronograph/ACT. The LP includes a version of Gregory Porter’s “Take Me to the Alley,” and this video features a live acoustic, alternate take of the song captured in one take at Trinity St. Paul’s United Church in Toronto, Canada. “I played this at my friend Wendy’s memorial. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers album set to be released

Blue Note Records are set to release Just Coolin’, a never-before-released studio album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, recorded on March 8, 1959 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Just Coolin

Blue Note Records are set to release Just Coolin’, a never-before-released studio album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, recorded on March 8, 1959 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. The session featured a short-lived line-up of The Jazz Messengers with drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt.

The album features two previously unissued compositions including Timmons’ tune 'Quick Trick'.

The session for Just Coolin’ finds The Jazz Messengers’ saxophone chair in transition. The band had last recorded in October 1958 when they cemented their place in jazz history with the classic album Moanin’ featuring Benny Golson on tenor saxophone. By July 1959, Blakey had recruited tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter who would remain a fixture of the band until 1964.

The interim saw the return of Mobley, who was a charter member of The Jazz Messengers when the band first formed in 1954 and appeared on their debut recording The Jazz Messengers At The Café Bohemia in 1955. Mobley also filled an important role as the band’s resident composer. In fact, three of the six tracks on Just Coolin’ were written by Mobley: 'Hipsippy Blues,' 'M&M,' and 'Just Coolin’'.

However, five weeks after the studio session Blue Note founder and producer Alfred Lion decided to record the band again at the legendary club Birdland in New York City on April 15, 1959, capturing an assured live recording that included four of the six titles that had been recorded in March. The Birdland sessions ended up superseding the studio date when Lion instead released the two-volume live album Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers At The Jazz Corner Of The World later that year.
