Can anyone recommend a couple good radio stations that play mostly bop and post bop instrumental stuff? Think Miles, Coltrane, Blakey, up to Mehldau, Sands, and Akinmusire.

I’m looking for a traditional type of broadcast with an announcer that identifies song and artist, not an internet playlist. I’ve tried WBGO, Jazz24, JazzFm, and Real Jazz on Sirius. They all play way too much vocal stuff and R&B for my taste. I don’t want to hear people singing about the glories of jazz; I want to hear people playing the real thing.

Thanks!

I don't listen to internet radio too much, except for some Pandora stations I made myself, but a friend of mine plays Real Jazz from Sirius XM radio, its not too bad.
I'm going to move this post to our radio station section, you might find more stations in that section too.

Made this account specifically for this thread!
has a vast array of jazz radio stations spanning the entire United States of America!

Likewise,
also boasts an incredible and distinct array of jazz albeit only during dusk. According to
my tastes anyhow~Embarrassed

Unfortunately, neither of those links worked for me, I wonder what the issue is.

Hi,

I have not, looked for stations on the net for this, pretty much like I do not do it for the rock side of things ... why?

I was next to radio for 6 years, with my old roommate, a special person on radio (Guy Guden - Space Pirate Radio), and he went on the air because the new music meant something to him, and many other folks, We're talking 1974 here.

The comments were that ... yeah, it went everywhere, but in reality, it was not from the actual listeners, but from the folks that worked at the station that had no taste in music, except for the blue dots, the red dots, the idiot dots, the crap dots ... you got it! And when they heard something NEW, or specially DIFFERENT, it always threw them off and they were not intelligent enough to say anything except something to make themselves sound "more with it", or "more in tune" with the music ... well, they were attuned to one sound ... not the music ... EVER, at least as long as I was around ... and Guy for a long time had posted all of these fights and arguments on his blog, and it was difficult for any of us, not to think ... that was mean ... of that was messed up ... but, in the end, Guy is remembered and a lot of folks are still showing up to listen to his show ... and no one remembers anyone from those old days at the station ... that's how "minor" and "inept" they were as artists.

I'm not against anyone doing this, and think it's a nice idea ... with only one problem ... in the progressive area, the first two I listened to (always tried to get at least a couple of shows), were "The Son of KC". Now, I happen to like KC, but I kind of stop at "Herd of Instinct", or at most Marcus Reuter. But none of these shows I heard (5 of them) were "special" ... they all adhered to the typical, boring standard of 5 minutes, for each piece, so considering them progressive was a stretch for me, and the choices were ... poor, not to mention that 3 of those shows had to play the old stuff we knew well, simply to tell us ... I am this and that ... and kinda make it look like they knew the music .... which, I doubt they even listened to the whole album, since at times, the choice was not the better piece at all ... just the one that was easier on the ears for the top ten listeners!

I listen to enough things, and review them, and do not feel the need to listen to a "show" especially by folks whose tastes, for me, could be considered ... musically inferior, or at least the selections showed a lack of variety that expanded the image (progressive in this case) instead of just playing stuff that would embarrass many of the original "progressive" players!

But if a good one shows up? I'm there ...  and in between I'll be happy with the few times Guy Guden does his show these days ... at 75 (he's a year older than I ... it would not surprise me if he had issues with his health ... but he is one of those folks that won't tell anyone anything, and keeps quiet in the personal stuff. But his shows are so far and away from all that stuff on the Internet, that it's hard to even consider saying that his show is this or that ... it is the most unique and far out of shows out there, and no one will ever be able to get close to it, since none of the other folks show any depth beyond reading the notes on the disk ... Guy's tastes goes to all kinds of music, and last year he just about plastered the show with a lot of jazz stuff from the West Coast, but his knowledge of movies and most music ... is ... pretty much, second to none ... it's just bizarre that some idiots at Sirius don't (obviously) even bother listening to their own crap ... to pick up the best there is out there that is different and aims to be different ... most don't!
