I've been on a pre-/proto-Jazz Rock Fusion kick lately whereupon many albums and articles on Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis have passed into my awareness and through my brain. What exciting story arcs to learn about!
Herbie has explored, expanded, retracted, and opened up to many new and unusual sounds, styles, and collaborations over the years. Do you have a favorite period from his amazing career? Also: if you have another "period," "era," or "phase" that you'd like to inform and educate us about, I'd love to hear about it!

I like almost everything Herbie has done, but to pick a favorite I would go with "Crossings" from the Mwandishi band, but I also really like his funk albums too. His post bop piano playing with Miles and his "Speak Like a Child" album are also top notch. I also like his hard bop and soul jazz records that came early in his career.
His experiments with hip-hop and techno in the 80s were also good. Along with the Mwandishi albums, I think some of his top albums include the first VSOP and a live CTI album that is often credited to Stanley Turrentine. By the way, you are probably familiar enough with this site to know that responses to threads like this are often slow in coming, this site gets a lot of visitors checking out our new music features, but they are very shy about posting on the forum for reasons I'll never understand.

I, too, am finding that I like almost everything Herbie has done. There is charm an intriguing shifts in every album. The Joni Mitchell tribute to Takin' Off, duets with Chick Corea to appearances on Simple Mind's New Gold Dream, Sextant's "Hidden Shadows" to Thrust's "Spank a Lee."
I, too, wish there was a more active participatory group here. Thanks for yours, js--and thanks for your wonderfully educational reviews on rateyourmusic.com that reminded me of JMA's existence! |

I didn't know I had reviews on RYM, maybe someone else is posting them. It's okay all the same, I have seen my reviews and genre definitions on other sites, just part of the wide open nature of the internet, ha.
