Thank you, Guigo. And for Holy Week. All videos were splendid. And probably the voice of Milton Nascimento which I heard for the first time might be this album.

I'm not a religious man but I reckon that themes regarding peoples' religiosity play a important issue in the Brasilian musical scenario. To be noted that in many cases the authors are well-known atheists.

I was checking out some other albums by Zimbo Trio, they look like someone we should add to the site. They have a lot of albums to tag, we'll probably tag all of them Latin Jazz at first, but I would imagine there are some Bossa albums in there as well as Pop.

I did not know Zimbo Trio well. However, I knew it if it was Sambalanco Trio.

The Corta-Jaca, composed by maestrina Chiquinha Gonzaga in 1895. Recorded by clarinetist Abel Ferreira & friends, in 1976.
1 x 0, choro by Pixinguinha, composed in 1919. Recorded by Pixinguinha & Benedito Lacerda Band in 1946. Another Brasilian classic: Tico-Tico No Fubá, composed by Zequinha de Abreu in 1924. Recorded by pianist Marco Aurelio Xavier in 1985. |

Just discovered this thread, and enjoyed it immensely...I'm a fan of Brasilian music of all sorts, and recognize many of these names, though a few are new discoveries, so Obrigado for that!
A few artists and groups spring to mind that I've not seen included..the "Crazy Samba" of Azymuth, as well as the solo projects of Bertrami and Malheiros.. the Samba-fied Funk of Banda Black Rio... and the unclassifiable music of Egberto Gismonti, for example. Surely Samba influences him-as does everything else he's ever heard, it seems!
I can't add vids because I'm at work, and vids are blocked...but later I will come back to this thread and watch all these vids and maybe add some too!
In a more jazzy way, but still influenced by Samba, Luiz Avellar......
Also, how about Jair Rodrigues? And how about Moacir Santos? Nosso Trio?
Brasil is fertile ground for amazing musicians and amazing music!

Be welcome, wideopenears.
Actually I started this thread as a way to keep samba in mind being that in my opinion samba and jazz are siblings. Although there's no room for pure samba in JMA, many sub-genres of jazz containing bits of samba (bossa nova, samba-jazz, latin jazz, etc) are natural part of these Archives. Later this thread developed into a space for general Brasilian music: traditional, choro, folk, modern, etc.

For the Saturday evening.
An old pop-rock adapted by Marisa Monte into a kind of indie song: Adriana Calcanhotto also made a recent cover of an old romantic song. Zélia Duncan did and sang this one. A new song with a clear taste of the 1960 & 1970s. |

April 23rd, St. George's Day and also National Day of Choro, in Brazil. The reason: birthday of Pixinguinha (Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Filho, 1897-1974), probably the greatest musician born in Brazil.
Here, 1911, Pixinguinha then 14 shredding the flute. Now, 1928, the orginal recording of a classic song: The song Pixinguinha liked most: |

I just searched Isabelle Antena. Her first album looks in particular good. Probably pop French of the 80s. However, this video sample looks good, too.
