Will upload a couple of new ones later on - for now I'll wait and see if anyone can deduce an album/song etc |

Thats an interesting Miles cut, sounds like hippie music or bongo beatnik music actually, the sort of thing Miles would often avoid. Who is the drummer?

^ Jimym Cob - yeah, I wonder whether the section I've snipped, is actually a bit of a cover inside the main song, I should re-listen to the studio cut and find out. It's recorded not too longer after Sketches of Spain

Interesting, I don't think the piano and drums are totally comfortable with that beat.

I wonder if it's because they're playing it faster? Here we go, a reveal: #1 is Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond (from Jazz Impressions of Japan) 'Fujiyama' - 1964 - CBS #1.1 is Don Ellis (from Soaring) 'Invincible' -1973 - MPS Records #1.2 is Miles Davis (from More Music from the Legendary Carnegie Hall Concert) 'Teo' - CBS |

Round 2 is too easy, I won't answer and give someone else a chance, anything from that era is the soundtrack of my youth. I remember this song well, but I will have to think to get the correct album, but I think I remember the song title, the band is a cinch, I probably saw them play this song live.

I'd hoped this round would start easier - I'll save up a harder one for later though
Would have loved to have seen them live! How about 2.1 - I tried to make it a little easier too |

I like 2.1, its Ellington influenced AG, which usually means either Sun Ra or Mingus. I'll go with Mingus.

Round 2 was convinced that it was certain that it was WR and Black Saint now. However, I forgot the name of the music.

Excellent!
Kazu 5 points and John should get a couple for the ground work he put in too. I'll leave this one open a little longer in case any one wants to take a stab at the Weather Report album/song. #2 is Weather Report ????????? ????? ???? ??? etc #2.1 is Charles Mingus (from The Black Saint...) 'Solo Dancer' - 1963 - Impulse! |

Nice work, Kazu! 5 more!
Perhaps one of the lesser known Weather Report songs, I don't often hear it mentioned in reviews but I like it a lot. Ok - round 3 opening soon! Edited by dreadpirateroberts - 05 Aug 2012 at 10:24pm |

Ashley, this thread are very interesting. However, please do not choose Chick Corea. If you extract a performance of Chick Corea, and the answer is "Akoustic Band", it is a trap for a respondent.

All right, here's Round 3 - I've put a very easy one in there (but not Chick just yet, Kazu )
Not sure about the difficulty of the other two - but here we go |

3 - Tyner and Jones?
3.1 - no idea 3.2 its a novelty song, an older style done with modern elements, I'm guessing Armstrong.

3 - Tyner definitely! (but with someone else)
3.1 - I'll give it a bit longer 3.2 - spot on Louis Armstrong (La vie en rose) recorded in 1950s perhaps? Not sure. I cut it before he sang on purpose. though I thought his trumpet would be nearly as distinctive. |

Re 3 - you're right, I actually didn't think that was Jones, it was just a guess, I do recognize that drumming style, but I can't think of who it is just yet.
Oh yeah, its DeJohnette?

^ Not a bad guess, it's certainly where my mind goes when I think of Tyner
Not Jack, but a fusion-hero to some degree
