Teo Macero on CD re-issues with alternate takes - "They're putting all the mistakes back in that we took out.". What do you'll think?

Yep, I agree. I like a couple of alternates or outtakes, that's usually enough for me - or a good live track can be enough.
I don't usually need the false starts unless the band has a laugh - even then, hardly required. Usually just the album is enough. Love that Teo quote! |

I actually like the alternate takes. I get a chance to hear the musicians improvise over the tunes differently. And it's really helpful when transcribing, because then I can memorize new solos, integrate new ideas into my own playing and even hear tunes played at different tempos than on the original. But mostly I like it for the transcribing purposes.

^ You sound like someone who could write good reviews, I don't know if that interests you or not.

True alternate takes are cool (though I don't really need two or three alternates for the same songs) but yeah...those 'false start' things are just silly.

Thanks! I write reviews in other niches on the web but never really have done so with jazz, even though it's the music I play. I suppose I could consider that.

Feel free to give it a shot, we have over 50,00 albums on here and each album has a place for a review. I just finished my review for "A Drum is a Woman", its on the sites front page, just like any recently finished review.
I'm hardly an Ellington expert, but I do like his music a lot.

Quite interesting illustration to above theme is "Intuition" album, released in 1996 under great pianist Lennie Tristano name as leader. In reality this release contains full Warne Marsh album "Winds Of Marsh" (Imperial LP 12013)(stereo sound, first 8 CD tracks),halfof same album's mono version (it was released under different name -"Jazz Of Two Cities" (Imperial LP 9027),track 9-13), and rest of the album (tracks 13-19) are Lennie Tristano compositions. As it would be not enough, Lennie himself plays only on those 6 last songs (of 19 in total). And it's not a cheap "budget grey label album", but Capitol Jazz release
