Hey everybody, I'm looking for suggestions for jazz circa World War II, especially the sorts of things from smaller groups (as opposed to big band). Anybody able to help me out?

I picked up Gillespie's Afro, enjoyed it a lot although it's hardly straight jazz |

We obviously need someone to fix the genre definitions on the Gillespie albums, all the same, "straight" is a genre I'm not aware of.

I'd just go through the albums and look at the band members listed (which are probably also incomplete at this time). I like Dizzy, but I'm hardly an expert, but his albums seem to come in 3 varieties; Big Band, Latin/African and Be Bop. More than likely, but not always, the albums with small combos and no percussion will be the Bop albums.

all the information I know about Dizzy is whatever is mentioned in the Miles Davis autobiography (which Ive read once, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm going to pick it up again soon). The book has a lot of info, with member lists and etc... Charlie Parker is obviously mentioned a lot (as well as Bud Powell and also Max Roach, all musicians Miles worked with closely in his early years.)
It's hard to find good albums to check out, without them being compilations. |

BTW, i think "straight" jazz refers to post-bop or hard-bop that isn't at all experimental. Be-bop (or bop) is usually faster and more aggressive and I dont think is usually associated with "straight" jazz. I dont really like the term too much.

yea i feel like "contemporary" is like that too. Not necessarily "smooth jazz", but modern post-bop/hard bop that doesn't push the boundaries of jazz

Pro jazz musicians will, use the term "straight ahead jazz", which means non-fusion and non-avant-garde, in other words, it usually refers to Swing or Bop.
