I thought a good place to start off the Top 10s and lists category with the most basic of posts... What are your top 10 favorite jazz albums? All genres, all eras, all bands, all whatever!
It's hard, but I'd say... 1. Kind of Blue (Miles Davis) 2. Blue Train (John Coltrane) 3. Crossings (Herbie Hancock) 4. Bitches Brew (Miles Davis) 5. Time Out (Dave Brubeck) 6. Exivious (Exivious) 7. Hot Rats (Frank Zappa) 8. Starke Stucke (Panzerballett) 9. Blow by Blow (Jeff Beck) 10. Heavy Weather (Weather Report) What's yours? Edited by andyman1125 - 07 Apr 2011 at 4:30pm |

1. A Love Supreme - John Coltrane 2. Karma - Pharoah Sanders 3. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis 4. Street of Dreams - Grant Green 5. Giant Steps - John Coltrane 6. Happy Frame of Mind - Horace Parlan 7. Time Out - Dave Brubeck Quartet 8. Empyrean Isles - Herbie Hancock 9. Heavy - Booker Ervin 10. My Favorite Things - John Coltrane

Is that only classic fusion, or did you squeeze something else too?

There's some AG jazz in there too.
I like almost every genre of jazz there is, but my favorite is psychedelic fusion and RnB, a lot of the best are from the 70s of course.

I wasn't aware that you were a big fan of that McLaughlin album! I discovered it this year and it's freaking fantastic.

LOL, what bullsh*t? You're referring to Mahavishnu or to his later solo albums? Yes, Larry Young makes a big difference, especially on the title track.

I was just kidding, but he has participated in some fairly pretentious projects over the years, not that I didn't enjoy most of them.

Ah, I see. Well, I think he has released stellar sutff in various projects, his early solo albums, the Mahavishnu records, with Miles Davis and with Shakti. All different, and yet all incredible showing the versatility of John, each time I hear one of those records I'm more convinced that he's one of the greatest guitarist ever.

I also thought you might be referencing McLaughlin's rock playing style which some call "bluffing", John.
