Indeed!

And yeah...hopefully amazon (or some other place) will post some audio samples because audio quality seems like it will be the only thing stopping me from buying that.

Acclaimed American saxophonist Branford Marsalis has announced the release of a new solo album, In My Solitude – Live in Concert at Grace Cathedral, which will be available in the UK from 20 October 2014on the OKeh label. The record comprises 11 tracks, including music by Steve Lacy and Ryo Noda, ‘Sonata in A Minor for Oboe: I. Poco adagio’ by C.P.E Bach and Hoagy Carmichael’s ‘Stardust’, interwoven with passages of spontaneous improvisation. It was recorded on 5 October 2012 when Marsalis became one of an elite group of jazz musicians to have performed at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedralsince its consecration in 1965, conducted to the soundtrack of Duke Ellington’s Concert of Sacred Music.

Shortly after the album’s release, Marsalis will lead his quartet on a European tour, with two sets at the EFG London Jazz Festival (one evening performance and a second later than night) now confirmed for Friday 14 November 2014. The group, which features Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass and the 23 year old Justin Faulkner on drums, will also play dates in Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Spain and Poland before returning to the USA. Marsalis also appears on a new Grateful Dead live three CD set, Wake Up To Find Out, recorded at Nassau Coliseum on 29 March 1990, which is released on Rhino Records this week.

I am very curios about this one ^ Last time I checked, J-L.P. looked reasonably energetic and nimble; not so sure about Anderson.

The poignant final album from revered trumpeterKenny Wheeler, who died on 8 September, Songs For Quintet is set for release on ECM Records on 12 January 2015 – just in time for what would have been his 85th birthday on 14 January.

Recorded in
December 2013 at London’s Abbey Road studios, and produced by Manfred Eicher andSteve Lake, the album features regular Wheeler collaborators saxophonist Stan Sulzmann, guitaristJohn Parricelli, bassist Chris Laurence and drummer Martin France. Fittingly it marks Wheeler’s return to the label that released some of his most cherished recordings including Gnu HighDeer Wanand Angel Song. Due to ill health the sessions for Songs For Quintet were the last time Wheeler was able to play with other musicians and as such he couldn’t perform as part of a planned celebratory gig after the recording.

From early listens the album showcases Wheeler’s impeccable compositions that always match strong melodies with intriguingly inventive structures – all of which is devoured by the vastly experienced band. Wheeler, playing flugelhorn throughout, sounds strong on material that’s surprisingly uptempo and driving, although solo duties often fall to Sulzmann and Parricelli. The compositions are drawn from Wheeler’s recent past and include a fresh approach to ‘Old Time’ (an Azimuth trio favourite) alongside a new take on ‘Nonetheless’, a piece first heard on Angel Song.

Other tracks include ‘
How It Was Then’ (another Azimuth piece from 1994), an aptly titled waltz-time piece ’A Pretty Liddle Waltz’, the tango-fuelled ‘Sly Eyes’, the intricate yet flowing ‘Jigsaw’, and ‘Canter No. 1’, which is a bass feature for Laurence before giving way to a powerful Sulzmann solo. See the
February 2015 issue of Jazzwise for an exclusive interview with Stan Sulzmann talking about the recording of the album.
