Original American guitarist David Torn first studio album in eight years is recorded by him solely. It contains wide range of guitar/processed guitar sounds from Frippian soundscapes to almost rock songs and shredding. In whole more "guitar" and less ambient than Fripp solo works.

Julia Hulsmann Quartet plays, Theo Bleckmann sings - probably more tasteful pop than true jazz, but it works. Don't expect Kurt Weill cabaret though.

Second album of Swiss-Italian trio Third Reel contains obviously European jazz with South European touch (or - melodic chamber jazz, warmer than usual ECM Nordic one), slightly more adventurous than regular ECM standard.

Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan for last decade have been one of the brightest young jazz stars, playing post-bop or jazz fusion, often scented with Caucasus music tradition. On his ECM debut  he will surprise even more - using label's already tested and really successful formula of combining  Jan Garbarek chamber saxophone music with Gregorian chants. Here on "Luys i Luso" Tigran plays tasteful and quite ascetic piano with Armenian chamber choir, musical material is Armenian sacred music starting from 5 century AD to our days. Comparing with Garbarek collaboration with The Hilliard ensemble (there are not too many others with whom this kind of music could be compared),Hamasyan and Armenian Chamber Choirs collaboration sounds seriously attractive - mostly because Armenian music is much lighter and far not so darkly depressive and totalitarian comparing with Gregorian chants. In both cases it's a music for fans, not for casul jazz lovers.

Leading Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava with support of whole-Italian quartet plays beautiful and tasteful fusion, rooted in Miles tradition and without often presented Italian sweetness. Great release!

Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia leads acoustic trio on his new album, dedicated to American pop songs and chamber music composer Alec Wilder's music. Characteristic for ECM South-European musicians warm and sentimental chamber balladry.

Beside of Norwegian drummer Thomas Stronen just released (on ECM) album as leader, Anglo-Scandinavian project Food (with his participation) released their new album as well(as trio this time).
No big surprises here - their music is melodic,ambient/electronic scented characteristic Nordic/"ECM sound" soundscapes.

It already become a tradition for ECM to open the year's catalog with stronger than their average release (even if their average is stronge than almost any other jazz label average release as well). Year 2016 opens with Israeli Avishai Cohen (trumpeter, not bassist) label's debut "Into The Silence". Mid-tempo and aerial (what one usually expects from ECM music), this album is more warm and more lively than label's regular music. Cohen trumpet flies over tasteful band's music, one can hear Miles fusion and Wadada Leo Smith's free soloing in this music, among other influences. Great year's start!

For those knowing Ches Smith as Mr.Bungle drummer it is most probably quite difficult to imagine him as ECM drummer, but his label's debut shows how different his music can be. Chamber avant-garde jazz, influenced by contemporary classics, is presented on Smith's ECM album "The Bell". Recorded by trio with pianist Craig Taborn and violist Mat Manieri

Israeli pianist Anat Fort trio's another album for ECM, this time with Italian reeds player Gianluigi Trovesi as guest. Trovesi can play very free, but here he sounds according to label rules - quite warm, even melancholic European chamber jazz  is decorated with his sax soulful solos
