Live Jazz Venues

Where does live jazz sounds best?

Never went (or been detered to go) to a jazz concert because of the location. Of course, it doesn't mean the atmosphere and the band tuning to the space doesn't count.

It's been mostly open-air festivals or evening club gigs. The Thing played acoustically at the Philarmonic, they loved it and for a very small concert hall, there was no loss of hearing. Back in '06, E.S.T. played at my Opera House.

I'd put bars last on the list, because you can't have an interesting concert, considerable attendance and limited tables - either the concert isn't that interesting or the place sucks. I do remember such an occasion, but the concert was light, it lasted from 10pm to 2 in the morning, because the artists took three breaks of 45 minutes to drink beer with their friends. I was sitting in the corner, shouting "Hey, I'm waiting here!".

From my experience it's easier for jazz to sound good in certain places than it is for rock. I don't think I've ever been to a jazz concert and said to myself "God, the sound sucked" after the end.

That said, I also prefer more intimate venues, like small clubs.

I've went to various jazz bars here in Argentina which are very good, both the ambience and the quality of the music.
