Georgia Anne Muldrow is adding another album to her VWETO series of instrumental LPs. Arriving on May 21st via FORESEEN Entertainment and her own imprint, Epistrophik Peach Sound, the full-length follows 2019's VWETO II and 2011's VWETO. "VWETO III is intended for movement," Muldrow said. "It's to be played when you birth yourself back outside after a long introspective period to get the things you need. It intends for you to be your own superhero and wants to be your theme for power." Based in Los Angeles, Muldrow is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and producer whose lengthy catalog connects the dots between avant-garde soul, funk, jazz and hip-hop. Read more about her in Part 2 of our Re-record feature.

Singer/songwriter/pianist Norah Jones is set to release ‘Til We Meet Again, her first full-length live album ever, on April 16 via Blue Note. The LP compiles 14 songs spanning her entire career, recorded in various parts of the globe between 2017 and 2019. The announcement comes with the release of the album’s first single. “It Was You,” recorded at the 2018 Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California, and performed with Pete Remm on organ, Christopher Thomas on bass, and Brian Blade on drums.

Norah Jones has shared a new live version of “Don’t Know Why” from her forthcoming first-ever live album, ‘Til We Meet Again, due out April 16 via Blue Note Records. Written by Jesse Harris, this was the hit song from the singer/songwriter/pianist’s fabled 2002 debut, Come Away With Me. This new live version of the song was recorded at Live au Campo in Perpignan, France, in 2018 and features Jones alongside organist Pete Remm, bassist Christopher Thomas and drummer Brian Blade.

Sons of Kemet Announce New Album Black to the Future, Share New Song With Kojey Radical: Listen

“Hustle,” also featuring vocals from Lianne La Havas, leads the Shabaka Hutchings–led jazz outfit’s record

Sons of Kemet
Sons of Kemet have announced a new album. Black to the Future is the follow-up to 2018’s Your Queen Is a Reptile, and it arrives May 14 via Impulse! Records (which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year). The fourth album from the Shabaka Hutchings–led jazz outfit is led by the single “Hustle,” featuring UK artist Kojey Radical; the track also has backing vocals from Lianne La Havas. Find it below.

Angel Bat Dawid, Moor Mother, and grime artist D Double E make guest spots on Sons of Kemet’s new record. “Black to the Future is a sonic poem for the invocation of power, remembrance and healing. It depicts a movement to redefine and reaffirm what it means to strive for black power,” Hutchings said in a press release.

“The meaning is not universal and the cultural context of the listener will shape their understanding,” he added. “Yet in the end, the overarching message remains the same: For humanity to progress we must consider what it means to be Black to the Future.”

Canadian-born, London-based trumpeter and composer Jay Phelps premieres the summery video for his take on the Gershwin classic

The singe ‘I’ve Got A Crush On You’, which was released on 24 March, was produced by Phelps and Broken Beat maestro Cengiz and features vocalist Mhari Aurora, with a funky, fun video shot in the Maldives. It's the first track from Phelps’ new Broken Standards series of EPs, which will be released via the trumpeter’s SoulEndvr Records label in the coming months.

In this upbeat and energetic track, Phelps has rearranged the Gershwin classic and given it an exciting new spin, made for the clubs and Jazz venues alike. Drawing inspiration from Broken Beat producers such as IG Culture or Mark De Clive Lowe, as well as the current London jazz scene, Broken Standards takes the jazz classic and flips it on its head with an all-star line-up.

Phelps has been a key presence on the London jazz since his time at university, when he founded and co-led the highly acclaimed group Empirical, going on to perform alongside such UK stars as Courtney Pine and Amy Winehouse as well as numerous leading jazz names. London-based, Phelps has developed an on-going love affair with the city’s evolving scenes and genres, as is reflected in his exploration of Broken Beat and electronic music across the EP series.

Commenting on the track and the upcoming Eps, Phelps said: “As I’ve been a silent fan of the Broken Beat scene here in the UK for some time, my aim was to rearrange a hand full of Jazz standards that I love with inspiration from the rhythms and grooves of Broken Beat.”

Hasaan Ibn Ali, Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album (Omnivore)

Omnivore has rediscovered a never-before-issued 1965 quartet recording by elusive jazz pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali. The recording was shelved by Atlantic after his incarceration on a narcotics possession and later thought destroyed. Finally seeing the light of day with audio restored from long-lost acetate copies of the sessions, Metaphysics also includes liner notes by Alan Sukoenig and Lewis Porter.

BADBADNOTGOOD Announce New Album, Share Strange Video for New Song “Signal From the Noise”

Talk Memory Due Out October 8 via XL/Innovative Leisure

Experimental Canadian jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD have announced a new album, Talk Memory, and shared its nine-minute long lead single, “Signal From the Noise,” via a strange video for it that features a man duct taping headphones to his head, puppets of security guards, and more. Talk Memory is due out October 8 via XL Recordings (in partnership with Innovative Leisure). The band collectively had this to say about the new album in a press release: “It took a year or two of just living life to get to the place where the creative process was exciting again and once we actually went in to the studio it was the most concise recording and writing process we’ve ever had. We hope that the improvised studio performances bring the listener closer to our live experience.”

Talk Memory Tracklist:

1. Signal From the Noise
2. Unfolding (Momentum 73) feat. Laraajii
3. City of Mirrors feat. Arthur Verocai

Three-time GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Denise Donatelli reimagines the music of Burt Bacharach on her new album, Whistling in the Dark. This intimately arranged collection, produced by four-time GRAMMY winner Larry Klein, is due out August 27 and features “A House Is Not a Home,” the premiere of which you can hear via the player below. “Larry’s idea was to reimagine Bacharach’s music in such a minimalistic way… to reframe them in a way that examines the very essence of the songs,” explains Donatelli. “He knew what he was striving for but left the room in the process for what became a great collaboration among the musicians.”
