AUM Fidelity to Release David S. Ware, William Parker Music

Rare Ware material dates from 1977

By JazzTimes

AUM Fidelity will release albums on Nov. 6 from two of the label's artists. The two-CD Birth of a Being presents the first recordings of David S. Ware as a leader and Great Spirit is a collection of songs created by William Parker's Raining on the Moon ensemble.

Saxophonist Ware’s work was created in New York, in April 1977, when Ware was 27 years old. The first disc features material originally released on LP in 1979 by the Swiss label hat Hut Records, and has been out of print for over 30 years. The second disc is a full additional album of material from those same sessions that have never been released in any form. This edition was sourced from the original analog 8-track tapes, and was newly mixed and mastered in 2015.

Raining on the Moon fuses Parker’s long-standing Quartet with drummer Hamid Drake, alto saxophonist Rob Brown and trumpeter Lewis Barnes, augmented by pianist Eri Yamamoto on chordal support, and singer Leena Conquest.

RareNoise To Release SLOBBER PUP'S POLE AXE featuring MATS GUSTAFSSON
(Published: October 09, 2015)

Two years after debuting with critically acclaimed debut album Black Aces, Slobber Pup are back with their sophomore release, titled Pole Axe. The original core lineup of renowned American keyboardist and pianist Jamie Saft (JS Trio, New Zion Trio, John Zorn's Masada, Merzbow, The New Standard, The Spanish Donkey), American guitar and double bass free music legend Joe Morris and Hungarian hardcore drummer Balazs Pandi (Wadada Leo Smith, Jamie Saft, Merzbow) is here augmented by the presence of Swedish sax titan Mats Gustafsson.

Jamie Saft's, Joe Morris' and Balazs Pandi's artistic relationship has been steadily developing on RareNoiseRecords since late 2012 : Saft and Pandi both played on Metallic Taste Of Blood; all three played on Slobber Pup's first release, and again with Wadada Leo Smith on Red Hill; Saft and Morris both played on Plymouth (with Mary Halvorson, Chris Lightcap and Gerald Cleaver) and The Spanish Donkey (with Mike Pride)

Recorded December 2013 in Jamie Saft's Potterville International Sound studio in the beautiful Catskills mountains, Pole Axe leverages the afore-mentioned chemistry and the tumultuous, monolithic yet psychedelic vigor of Mats Gustafsson's reeds, yielding three boundless free-form excursions.

This journey, which starts with the torrential "Pole Of Combustible Memory", continues with the equally extended "Bring Me My Desire And Arrows To Shoot" (a title inspired by William Blake) and concludes with Incendiary Axe, is a chiaroscuro stream of consciousness that might have been burned on 35mm analog reel. Visions relentlessly follow visions, temperature and texture changes flow into another without hardly rest.

The endless depth of Saft's and Morris' interplay, multiple analog synths and organs engaged in a at times vertiginous dance with the guitar, is here deeply complemented by Gustafsson's saxophone multiform saxophone, sustained by Pandi's at times restrained, at times virulent drumming. Here again one can sense the manifestation of the notion of glacial time theorized by Morris - a state of deep listening between musicians, when time is felt and understood by all, but does not need to be overtly stated. Everyone is experiencing the pulse, yet everyone's focus is on the larger arc of the music.

TRACKS
1. Pole Of Combustible Memory (29:35)
2. Bring Me My Desire And Arrows To Shoot (17:50)
3. Incendiary Axe (4:35)

Jamie Saft - Hammond, Analog Organs, Analog Synthesizers
Joe Morris - Guitars
Mats Gustafsson - Saxophones
Balazs Pandi - Drums

Not my favorite period of WR, but all the live stuff I've heard from them is pretty excellent. I'll probably be getting this.

Resonance to Release Live 1959 Wes Montgomery CD

Guitarist is heard in tandem with pianist Eddie Higgins

By JazzTimes

Resonance Records will release the CD edition of Wes Montgomery’s One Night in Indy, a 1959 live recording of the guitarist playing with pianist Eddie Higgins and his trio in Indianapolis, Ind. Available on January 15, the CD edition follows the release of the limited-edition 12-inch LP pressing for Record Store Day on Nov. 27. Early in 2015, Resonance Records released the acclaimed In the Beginning, newly discovered recordings of Montgomery from 1949-1958.

According to a press release, “In 2013, producer Zev Feldman was approached by the late, great Indiana photojournalist Duncan Schiedt with an enticing musical proposition (the two had become friends while working on the Wes Montgomery Echoes of Indiana 2012 Resonance release). Schiedt asked if Resonance would be interested in a prized recording he had in his possession—a 7" tape reel featuring a January 18, 1959, performance by Montgomery and the Eddie Higgins Trio, the only known documentation of any date featuring the guitarist and the pianist.”

The release continues: “According to producer Feldman, Duncan and few of his friends ran a jazz club in Indianapolis known as the Indianapolis Jazz Club (or the I.J.C. to locals). Members of this club recorded this one-night-only performance of Wes Montgomery playing with the Eddie Higgins Trio.”

The CD features just over 40 minutes of music, which also features Chicago drummer Walter Perkins (a former drummer for Ahmad Jamal’s trio before Vernell Fournier) and an unidentified bassist.

Tracks

1. Give Me the Simple Life (9:14)
2. Prelude to a Kiss (5:52)
3. Stompin’ at the Savoy (7:12)
4. Li’l Darling (8:09)
5. Ruby, My Dear (8:35)
6. You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To (2:51)

Blue Note to Release “Detroit Jazz City” Benefit Album

Compilation includes past and current Detroit jazz artists

By JazzTimes

Blue Note Records has announced the December 4 release of Detroit Jazz City, a compilation benefit album that spotlights the city’s contributions to jazz, both past and present. All proceeds from the album will be donated to the organization Focus: HOPE, to aid in what a press release describes as “its solutions to the problems of hunger, economic disparity, inadequate education and racial divisiveness in Southeastern Michigan.”

Detroit Jazz City was produced by Blue Note Records president Don Was, who is from Detroit originally. Was assembled the album by selecting catalog tracks by Detroit-born artists from the Blue Note vaults, alternating them with new recordings that he produced featuring current Detroit jazz artists, including vocalist Sheila Jordan (who recorded her debut album Portrait of Sheila for Blue Note in 1962), bassist Marion Hayden, saxophonist James Carter, guitarist Spencer Barefield and the recently departed trumpeter Marcus Belgrave.

The catalog tracks on Detroit Jazz City include material from Detroit-born jazz artists like Joe Henderson, Donald Byrd and Elvin Jones who left Detroit for New York, and also lesser known musicians such as pianist Kenny Cox, who returned home from New York to Detroit, where he remained a fixture of the local scene as a performer, professor, WDET radio personality and founder of Strata Records.

Track Listing

1. Marion Hayden – The Uncrowned King
2. Kenny Cox – You
3. James Carter – Many Blessings
4. Joe Henderson – Mode for Joe
5. Marcus Belgrave – Lottie The Body’s Mood
6. Elvin Jones – Reza

Fahir Atakoğlu "Live at Umbria Jazz" Featuring Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez & Alain Caron
(Published: January 05, 2016)

Fahir Atakoğlu
"Live at Umbria Jazz"
Featuring Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez & Alain Caron
Release Date: January 19, 2016

New 2016 Release Integrates Cuban Rhythms & Middle Eastern Melodies
World Tour Planned

Fahir Atakoğlu releases his latest CD "Live at Umbria Jazz" (Far & Here label) on January 19, which is the 17th album in Fahir's vast catalogue of music with plans for a 2016 world tour underway. Atakoğlu has worked to blend his own native music with sounds from the wider world, incorporating Cuban rhythms, Middle Eastern melodies, and improvisation as perfected by American jazz artists. Fahir's three previous U.S. jazz releases and his CDs have made it to #1 (three times) on the JazzWeek World Music Chart as well as charting high on the JazzWeek Jazz Chart.

Fahir's Turkish melodies smoothly blend into the context of a precision-balanced, high-powered jazz trio consisting of Fahir on piano, the great Cuban drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez and renown Canadian bass player Alain Caron. In the CD liner notes, Grammy® Award winner for album notes, Neil Tesser writes "... True to his roots, Atakoğlu has used his birthright as inspiration for many of these songs. Amongst the wide palate, 'Gypsy In Me' sounds a bit like what might have resulted had Thelonious Monk visited the Topkapi Palace... The moody, introspective 'Connection' has a Turkish foundation, expressed in its introductory measures; but the main melody hews closer to a modern American standard, and its rhythms range from a bossa-nova tinge to a touch of tango. 'Connection' forges a bridge between east and west. More than anything else, that connection defines his music."

DOT TIME RECORDS' LEGENDS' SERIES RELEASE: THE NATIONAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE FEATURING GERRY MULLIGAN

Dot Time Records is pleased to announce the second release in its 'Legends' series entitled National Jazz Ensemble featuring Gerry Mulligan. The album is scheduled for worldwide release on February 20th, 2016. This release is the first of a series of recordings by Chuck Israels and the National Jazz Ensemble (NJE) in the 'Legends' Series.

This album documents the NJE's performance of the February 2nd, 1977 concert at the New School in NYC. In its third year of existence at the time, the NJE usually sold out on the road and had good crowds at the New School, however the NJE never sold out in New York until Gerry Mulligan was the guest soloist. Gerry had made himself scarce over the previous decade and everyone in attendance understood the importance of the event. There were lines around the block. There were enough people on line to fill a second show.

This release has Mulligan playing some amazing Baritone solos while also adding some humor and warmth with his introductions. Mulligan plays on six of the nine tracks. The NJE was an impressive ensemble under Israels' baton and the recording demonstrates the power and versatility of their collective. The release also features beautifully written liner notes by David Berger, trumpeter, archivist and ensemble witness to that majestic night nearly 40 years ago.

It seems to be no coincidence that 10 years after this concert, Wynton Marsalis and David Berger formed the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra using the NJE as their prototype.

Naked Truth, Jazz-Rock Quartet of Graham Haynes, Lorenzo Feliciati, Roy Powell, Pat Mastelotto - New Album Avian Thug To Be Released on RareNoise

Recorded in the south of England at the end of their 2013 European Tour, Avian Thug is the third studio album by jazz-rock ensemble Naked Truth, after Shizaru in 2011 and Ouroboros in 2012.

Founded by Italian bassist / producer / composer Lorenzo Feliciati, Naked Truth sees Graham Haynes resuming his role as trumpet/cornet player, Roy Powell man the Hammond organ, analog synths and prepared piano and finally Pat Mastelotto deliver his usual energy on acoustic and electric drums and percussion.

Avian Thug develops its themes across seven compositions, stretching from intensely furious electric jazz cavalcades, whose ancestry can be traced back both to Miles' electric work but also more recent European progressive jazz and progressive rock, to extended soundscapes, whose colors are reminiscent of the work of Jon Hassell or Nils Petter Molvaer.

Over the last four years, Naked Truth's writing style has become progressively more incisive and focused, aided by the very tight co-production work of Lorenzo Feliciati and Bill Laswell, who also is responsible for the final mix of Avian Thug. Graham Haynes' trumpet tone has acquired clarity and expressiveness, Feliciati's bass work is now more essential as are Powell's prestidigitation on analog keyboards and prepared piano, supported by Mastelotto's polyrhythmic ever inventive and powerful electronic and acoustic drum and percussion work.

Naked Truth's music was always recognizable as erupting from a magmatic cauldron of inventions; with Avian Thug it reaches a new maturity where instrumental prowess and poetic insight are tightly knit into a vigorous but balanced weave of form and substance.

TRACKS
1. Rapid Fire
2. Lazy Elephant
3. Trap Door
4. Tense Shaman
5. Avian Thug
6. Day Two At Bedlam
7. Moon At Noon

Graham Haynes - Electrified Cornet
Lorenzo Feliciati - Electric Bass, Guitars, Production
Roy Powell - Hammond Organ, Analog Synths, Prepared Piano
Pat Mastelotto - Acoustic & Electronic Drums, Percussion

Unreleased Live Gilberto/Getz Album from 1976 Due in Feb.

Resonance Records will also release Stan Getz Quartet set

By JazzTimes

Resonance Records has announced the Feb. 19 release of Getz/Gilberto ’76, a collection of previously unreleased live recordings featuring Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer João Gilberto, saxophonist Stan Getz and Getz’s rhythm section of pianist Joanne Brackeen, bassist Clint Houston and drummer Billy Hart. The recording was made May 11-16, 1976, at the San Francisco club Keystone Korner.

A companion album, the Stan Getz Quartet’s Moments in Time, featuring the same personnel minus Gilberto, will be released at the same time.

The Getz/Gilberto ’76 release comes over 50 years after the release of Gilberto and Getz’s million-selling, Grammy-winning album Getz/Gilberto (1964), and its sequel Getz/Gilberto #2 (1966, both on Verve Records). The 1976 Keystone engagement represents one of few times the duo reunited after its initial collaboration in 1962. States a press release, “According to the club’s founder and owner Todd Barkan, this engagement was João Gilberto’s first public performance after a four-year hiatus.”

Getz/Gilberto ’76 is available as a deluxe CD and limited-edition 12'-inch, 33-1/3 rpm LP mastered by engineer Bernie Grundman and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Incorporated (R.T.I.) in a limited edition of 2,000 copies. It is also available digitally for pre-sale on iTunes with three “instant gratification” tracks upon purchase: “É Preciso Perdoar,” “Chega de Saudade” and “Morena Boca de Ouro.”

Moments in Time was also recorded at the Keystone Korner, the same week as Getz/Gilberto ’76.

New Frisell Album Explores Music of Classic Cinema

Though recently nominated for a Grammy Award for his 2014 release, Guitar In The Space Age, Bill Frisell won’t be taking it easy in 2016. The guitarist’s next album, When You Wish Upon A Star (OKeh Records), is scheduled for release on Jan. 29 in the U.S. and Feb. 6 internationally.

Produced by Lee Townsend and arranged by Frisell, the album features the guitarist’s longtime collaborators Petra Haden (vocals), Eyvind Kang (viola), Thomas Morgan (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums and percussion). When You Wish Upon A Star is yet another showcase of Frisell’s unique treatment of atmosphere and texture, a trademark blend for which the 64-year-old Maryland-born musician is renowned.

With some 33 albums to his name, Frisell’s recent explorations have included experimentation with r&b rhythms, vinyl LP sampling and guitar dissonance (2009’s Unspeakable); a joyous examination of the compositions of John Lennon (2011’s All We Are Saying); and an inspired travelogue (2013’s Big Sur). Frisell’s penchant for musical shape-shifting, sonic storytelling and aural conjuring is equally evident on When You Wish Upon A Star.

“I’ve been watching TV and movies my whole life,” Frisell said by way of introducing the album. “What I’ve seen and heard there is a huge part of, and is embedded so deeply into, the fabric of what fires my musical imagination.”

When You Wish Upon A Star consists of iconic film and television scores, reworked in that special style that is Frisell’s alone. His ensemble proves adept at transforming “The Shadow Of Your Smile" (from the 1965 film The Sandpiper) as well as such exotic fare as Bernard Herrmann’s theme to Psycho and Ennio Morricone’s theme to Once Upon A Time In The West. Frisell’s group learned the material, much of which was popular before some members were born, by either committing lyrics to memory or by total immersion in the original score. This was followed by hours and hours of practice. Often the practice paid off, but not every time.

The two-part opener, “To Kill A Mockingbird,” is far more ominous and surreal than Elmer Bernstein’s 1962 score, which was oddly saccharine for a film of such serious content. Frisell’s “Mockingbird,” framed by light, flickering guitar and Kang’s yearning viola, hints at the film’s breezy southern location, but also its inherent violence. The eerie, nightmarish effects of “Pt. 1” and the feel-good groove of “Pt. 2” make for queasy bookends.

“Psycho Pt. 1” inspires a rote if fun treatment, Haden’s voice and Kang’s viola tracing the spooky melody note-for-note as Royston swings country-funk. “Psycho Pt. 2” sounds plaintive and foreboding, Haden’s dry voice hovering over Frisell’s humid plucking like a buzzard circling a carcass.

“The Shadow Of Your Smile,” that most hoary of standards, benefits from Haden’s pure delivery, her emotional follow-through highlighting the song’s melody, accompanied by a beautiful solo from Frisell, who consistently turns small gestures into epic moments.

Another Morricone composition, “As A Judgment,” is a highlight. As Frisell unleashes the sunburned melody, Royston brings thumping solo smashes and a death-dance groove. Kang’s viola howls, and Frisell’s spectral, delayed guitar seems to call for murder as Royston drives the flamboyant march with Grand Guignol merriment.

Frisell’s own “Tales From The Far Side” fares well, momentarily recalling “My Favorite Things,” but ultimately has more in common with Herrmann and Morricone than The Sound Of Music. And “Tales” is a burner, Frisell pulling out all the stops in his otherworldly guitar arsenal. Haden mirrors the ghostly guitar melody, the band swirling like snake-charmers. “The Godfather” is equally turbulent.

When You Wish Upon A Star’s live performances will no doubt offer greater expanse for improvisation, an area where Frisell reigns supreme. The group will tour from early January to mid-March, including dates in Vienna, Virginia; Easton, Massachusetts; Kansas City, Missouri; and Scottsdale, Arizona.
