So I've tried to be selective here, and also to only chose one appearance per artist - say with Miles for instance, there were obviously many choices I could have thrown up. Researching this one alerted me to some signifcant gaps in my collection, so it'll be nice to follow up this poll with some purchasing!
Obviously Hancock's contributions to these albums vary - ie: as significantly as 'shared billing' right down to appearances on several tracks rather than all tracks on a given record, though I didn't want a heap of albums in here where he only guested on a song - as it says, I was trying for mostly 'sideman' efforts, or at least, significant appearances where he wasn't a leader. UPDATE: Forgot to put an 'Other' option - feel free of course Edited by dreadpirateroberts - 09 Dec 2011 at 7:13am |

"White Rabbit" is a cool record, I think I'll put it on now. Not a great jazz record really, just a cool curiosity. Benson and Hancock are the best.

White Rabbit, indeed! Love it, the title track and California Dreamin' are faves of mine, done by Benson.
Speak No Evil is pretty much a classic jazz record, but still needs more listens from me till it becomes a fave. The same goes for Miles Smiles. Straight Life is pretty fantastic as well, but not sure if it's much for Hancock's playing.

As a result, I went to "Third Plane". However, I may be at a loss by choice more if a list had Kimiko Kasai. "As" of Stevie Wonder is famous, but feels that the performance of Hancock is average.

The forum member who has not heard a performance of Santana-Hancock please refer to a page of Carlos Santana.
Everybody can check mp3 there. |

Mmmmhhh!!!...
difficult to discern between the general quality of the album, and the quality of Hancock's participation to it...
Let alone on how many tracks he guested on the given album...
I'll have to give it some time

That's also an issue... Herbie has guested on almost everyone's albums et one point or another
I heard four or five albums on this list (Santana, Benson, Maupin Shorter, Hubbard, plus maybe more)

Tried to make it a tough poll - I've been taking my time with this one too.
I've nearly gone with Straight Life but it's definitely a real ensemble album, the sum total being more impressive than any one player on it? I'm pretty tempted by White Rabbit too - as it's an interesting album indeed, and I think Herbie's keys add a lot for sure. Really want to hear these two first though: The Procrastinator - Lee Morgan The Jewel in the Lotus - Bennie Maupin |

Not long ago I got Happenings but I have to hear it a few more times, to see whether it's a contender. Liking the album a lot though

Happenings > Straight Life > Miles Smiles > Third Plane > The Procrastinator.
Please do not forget his awe-inspiring performance on Joe Farrell's Moon Germs!
