What jazz artists did you discover in 2011?

Personally, I have a long list, here are just some highlights:

Francois Couturier
Julia Hulsmann
Marius Neshet
I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again ...
Ken Burns

As one of the people who does a lot of evaluations for the site, I've listened to hundreds of great new artists since the site opened. One that stands out is Chris Colangelo.

I may feel the new music to be old and may feel the old music to be new.

Depends how loose the term "discovery" is. As "js" said, you yourself could have simply "discovered" many of the artists suggested for the site. In my case, I'd define it as "having heard at least one full recording by a jazz artist new to me"

Except for a few (Dixon, McTyner, Art Ensemble of Chicago). I definitely didn't look extensively into each of those artists. Many had a new album this year and I listened to just that. I haven't listened to any other Braxton except for this year's four releases (recorded '08); I actually have to go back to his classics now!

Check Braxton's "Town Hall 1972" (real "jazzy" Braxton) and Charles Gayle (I saw Ware and McPhee on your list) Smile

I am digging the Bob Belden Tim Hagens animation Bitches Brew Tribute, Asiento , Did the drive from Dayton to Columbus with it, I was very pleased with it.  Not a Mockery at all, Hagens is quite good on it.

Oy. This is difficult. Most of the jazz I"ve bought this year is from artists I've known and have had things from for awhile.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head that fits is Mingus.
Hit it on Five.

Saxophone Scatterbrain Blitzberg

Stab them in the ears.
