For me Hiromi is 5th in preferences after Avishai Cohen , Anouar Brahem, Mathias Eick and Lars Danielsson
Great names, if it were in Bucharest I would have gone for sure, Garana is for young and enthusiasts people |

If I can ever pick up the phone and make a reservation already, I will go.
Heavier names than those were rumored, but I guess all the piggy banks were smashed. Edited by Ricochet - 13 Apr 2011 at 5:32am |

OK, I like Lars Danielsson (especially as duo with Leszek Mozdzer, saw them live in 2009 in Vilnius Jazz), Avishai Cohen isn't my favorite - nice melodic Middle East world fusion is not my cup of tea, especially with his last album's openly pop-oriented trend.
From the list, still Hiromi's new trio looks as a main attraction for me (am not familiar with all names though)

Yes, it is to be expected that Hiromi will be the highlight. There's a small hill nearby, and in the past years it always got filled with people, even if it was actually a graveyard, when Jan Garbarek, Bela Fleck or Jean-Luc Ponty played.

I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again ...

According to reports from the festival, it seems that Hiromi gave one of the best performance in the history of the festival and according to the organizer ,Avishai Cohen's performance was the most popular one in the history of the festival, lasting 3 hours(1 and a 1/2 more than programmed), one report describing the atmosphere similar to a rock concert

I guess nobody is happy when he has to wait 1&1/2 hour for preparing the sound system |

Last year it was people who had no business with the festival stinking up the place. What were the complaints?
That happened plenty of times. |

Hmm, was ts their first experience or more like finally having enough of it?
Re: the first two - I don't think this year's Garana was something to die for. The headliners were clear. Times have long been tough, so maybe there's also enough you can hope for. There were apparently more Romanian bands, either were they too minor (I see Butoi/Tiberian/Zan didn't play in the festival per se, that is quite faulty thinking) orthe usual funk/jam bands to wrap up the evening, either were they simply underwhelming (for sure Horea Crisovan is junk in the context of this festival) or OMG BEGA BLUES BAND DIDN'T PLAY FAIL FAIL A THOUSAND FAILS. *cough* The rest is subjective, I can't fully understand from any of these quotes how the quality of the playlist is adressed, precisely because I wasn't there and I haven't heard it (yet). It's clearly a festival playing its counters on the same spot every year (nordic ECM, nu-jazz, fusion) and if so, the fanbase is conservative about it. I probably would have barfed at Avishai, especially with his recent album being promoted, otherwise, from what I hear, he was spectacular. - it could just as well be that he was so in the eyes of the faithful "Garanari". The third one adresses what I said earlier, about BBQ and people just coming to drown themselves in the Three Waters. Edited by Ricochet - 25 Jul 2011 at 1:32pm |

I've also heard Avishai's show was brilliant and he had the longest standing ovation ever.
These guys were at their first Garana, I think, and only Saturday and Sunday. |
