Rolling Stone have updated their list of the 'Top 500 albums of all time', placing Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On on the top step, demonstrating the political importance of the release, and the relevance today.

The magazine first created the feature in 2003, then updated it in 2012 and again now, with new input from more than 300 artists, producers, critics, and music-industry figures.

In a recent online poll, Jazz FM listeners voted that Marvin Gaye's What's Going On was their favourite "Soul Album of All Time".

Marvin Gaye's synonymous album toppled The Beatles' Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which held the top position on Rolling Stones' list since its creation in 2003. Marvin Gaye's album was previously not in the top 500 at all and joined 153 new entries on the lists reboot.

One of the entries which entered the list was Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, which heavily features jazz idioms and the saxophone playing of Kamasi Washington.

Other artists with albums in the top 10 now include Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (#4), Joni Mitchell's Blue (#3), Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (#10), Bob Dylan's Blood on the Track (#9) and Prince and the Revolution's Purple Rain (#8).
