"Kendall = Groove. You can't help but smile when you hear him play."

Walter Smith III (Jazz Saxophonist)

This is my sophmore release and I’ve gathered some of my good friends and great players to join me on this record of mostly original music. The rhythm sections features Ohioans Dan Wilson (Joey Defrancesco & Christian McBride) and James Gaiters (Soul Revival). These two gentlemen I’ve had the pleasure of playing with throughout the midwest for the better part of the last two years. We all come from a deeply rooted church background, and so these brothers help me to keep the groove slappin’ and your toes tappin’. A few of the tracks feature Marlin McKay on trumpet, my longtime musical partner here in Kentucky and Chad O’Brien, my former college mate.

This release is comprised of six originals and four covers. Each of the originals take their influence from some person or a personal aspect of my life. “Turning Circles” is dedicated to the one and only Thelonious Monk, who often spun in circles while on stage performing. “Gumdrop” is dedicated to the great Erroll Garner and thus is played in the squabbling style of which he inspired. ”For The Soul’s Sake” and “What A Time” are simply rooted in the blues and gospel tradition from which I come. Lastly, “Right on Brother” is my nod to writing a jazz standard that keeps the tradition alive. The record ends with Blues for KC. Ain’t nothing like playing the blues from start to finish!

For the four covers, I chose the great standard rep “Ritha” by Larry Young becuase of the great influence he has had on my playing. “Your Basic Gospel Song” sounds right out of a hymnal, and that’s why I chose this one; because it is the meat and potatoes of my musical childhood -- hymns! “You’re So Good to Me” comes from one of the first integrated Contemporary Gospel Groups Andrus, Blackwood, & Co. and I took the liberty of slowing down this tune, and playing it more like a pop ballad. It sits nicely this way. Lastly, “Happiness Is Now” is a Freddie Hubbard original which that I pulled out because of my love for playing in the city of Indianapolis (Freddie’s hometown)!

I hope everyone enjoys listening to this record as much as I enjoyed putting it together. In the words of Kool and The Gang, “Let The Music Take Your Mind!”
