(November 15, 2024) – TODAY, with their unwavering commitment to preserve and reintroduce legacy recordings, Candid Records announces the release of four new remastered titles. This collection features two NEA Jazz Masters, multiple GRAMMY® winners, Downbeat Hall of Famers, the maestro of Latin Jazz, one of the greatest blues pianists of all time, and a new entry in the Mingus canon.

WHO’S SMOKING?
PAQUITO D’RIVERA (with James Moody)

Available for the first time ever on vinyl, D’Rivera’s 1992 homage to bebop. With a section that includes Grammy award winner and Dizzy Gillespie alum James Moody, distinguished straight ahead jazzers Mark Morganelli, Harvey Swartz and Al Foster, and major Latin-jazz players of the day Claudio Roditi, Danilo Perez, and Pedrito Lopez. The album features a mix of original compositions from featured players, alongside the ensemble’s take on Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”, and Monk’s “I Mean You,” all delivered with D’Rivera’s unique perspective and deep understanding of traditional jazz and Latin music traditions.

INDIAN BLUES
DONALD HARRISON JR. (featuring Dr. John)

Originally recorded at BMG Studios in New York City in May of 1991 Donald Harrison Jr., one of finest saxophonists of his generation, pays tribute to his hometown of New Orleans and is accompanied by the legendary Dr. John. The album features a mix of original compositions and jazz standards, and features the Indian chants of The Guardians Of The Flame, capturing the magic of heritage New Orleans Mardi Gras music.

WALKING THE BLUES
OTIS SPANN

The sessions Spann did with Candid Records co-founder Nat Hentoff in 1960 resulted in the legendary album Otis Spann Is The Blues. The tracks on Walking The Blues were recorded during those same sessions but would not be officially released until 1972, two years after Spann’s untimely death. Featuring Robert Lockwood Jr. of Muddy Water’s group on guitar, and Spann’s close friend, veteran singer and composer James Oden, better known to blues fans as St. Louis Jimmy. Stripped down to just the three musicians, this magnificently performed and produced set showcases Spann’s immeasurable talent piano and vocals. This vinyl reissue is an all analog remastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman.

REINCARNATIONS
CHARLES MINGUS

The music Charles Mingus and his group recorded during his landmark 1960 sessions for Candid Records produced three of the most revered jazz albums of the era. REINCARNATIONS is a new masterpiece, and the second volume of thoughtfully assembled rare material from those sessions, that stands proudly in the Mingus canon of masterworks. The songs compiled in this set are more experimental than their original versions and convey the freedom that Mingus prioritized. That we’re still assessing the Candid sessions sixty-three years later only speaks to his vitality as an innovator, and of Reincarnations as important art with evolving context. Remastered by Bernie Grundman.
