Hi, (With one apology ... I'm on SS and can not afford to buy everything I listen to, I do not mean, ever, to take advantage of the work, as I like to review it, if possible, but I'm worried about reviewing just one song, instead of the album itself. Thx) Ambrose Akinmusire Muffled Screams from "Honey From a Winter Stone" Only heard this long piece, and I have to admit, it was neat. I am not a rap person per se, coming from theater and film, where diction is very important, and all too often I find that rap, is ignoring that side of things for one style of expression. Maybe some folks hear and speak that fast, but in general, that's asking folks not to pay attention except one sentence with a longer pause. The music itself? Very nice and quite enjoyable, and would love to hear more of it. ======================= Damon Locks Click from "List of Demands" Only heard this piece on Bandcamp. (The others locked). I might think that the lyrics are too much for this, but the music is nice, and it does not fall into "rap" and more shows itself as poetry, which is kinda nice. I wish I could say more about the music, but one small cut is not enough to make a good word on it. ======================= Naughty Professor Live (2021) Scrollin' (from their website) Nice to see a tight band that knows their stuff and stand out for its quality ... though I would think the presentation needs a bit of work, but I'm a "director" of theater and film in my heart, and music that is so enjoyable needs the personality with it. Not sure this fits as jazz, but it would fit somewhere between jazz and rock ... with some rap and lots of featured vocalists, this is a sort of reminder of some music of a few years back, with some light rap included. Nice funky stuff. ======================= Kali Trio Organelle from "The Playful Abstract" Nice stuff, and would love to hear more. Simple and ambient like kinda moving around with electronics, to create an interesting vision ... though for some it might be considered too busy. Would like to hear more, but on Bandcamp it is locked. ======================= Moses Yoofee Trio Ridgewalk from "MYT" Green Light from "MYT" Whip from "MYT" A nice set of pieces, that flow to some jazz, and sul music, and what might be considered hip-hop ... instrumental, and probably experimental ... but interesting. For me, for a jazz influence the material is too short, and probably leaning towards the commercial side of things, as the second piece shows, but it has some very nice touches, much more sensitive to the soul of the whole thing that the lyrics, as far as I can tell. Would like to see if these folks can extend things, as I have a feeling that some of this material will fly well in a longer setting. On the 3rd piece, you can get a much stronger jazz feel that really begs for a lot more ... a heck of a lot more! |

The album isn't out yet, that's just a preview. Once the album is out, the tracks will probably all be there.

Anthony Joseph
Rowing Up River To Get Our Names Back 2025 Interesting material, on the nationalistic side of things, very listenable, and lively, with some nice lyrics from the poetry and writings by Anthony Joseph ... and the beat, or the funk'y style could be said to be secondary to the actual words, that stand out from the rest ... you don't even get this kind of work in the rock area at all, where folks think lyrics are important but will intentionally ignore them when it isn't in their favorite style, or with some growling. Only 3 pieces from the album that will be released in a couple of weeks. They are nice ... very nice indeed ... "Black History" is very good, and a historyical sort of work ... in a way that we did not expect to hear ... but very intelligently done, and strong. Nice enough that I had to listen to it again ... and again ... to the point that I could not listen to anything else after it ... and that is the meaning of something that is well done and good. =============================== The Young Mothers Before If You Let It Based on one piece, the title one (I presume), this is interesting, though we might think it has some touches that are not always found ... I couldn't help thinking of the original Mothers (Frank Zappa's) and hopefully it wasn't because of the name of the group ... but it was a very slight touch, and likely no connection, but it made the whole thing interesting, specially for a long cut. Album is due in about a month, so this is a bit of a preview, and if the rest of the album is anything like this piece, it should be worth while for a good listen. ================================ Paul Taylor It's a Brand New Day Sample is "Forever More" and it is nice and if anything you can tell the experience and the ability of someone that has a very long history in the music business as a collaborator for many folks ... and this piece is a very nice ballad that is well thought out and played like it. We can only hope the album is the same. It is due in about a month.
