New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 10th January 2025

by Maddy Allison

After a busy Christmas and New Year, we’re back with some brand new releases! Recording as a leader for the first time in 20 years, drummer Carl Allen brings us his new trio album Tippin’, whilst Brown Spirits diversify this week’s round up with the intergalactic sounds of their album Cosmic Seeds. We see in Flygmaskin’s Ianchelevici the influence of art on their music, where compositions have been crafted for accordian, keyboards and strings. This week also sees the return of saxophonist Xhosa Cole with his third album, centred around Thelonious Monk, On a Modern Genius Vol. 1, and concluding this week’s round up is a vocal album from Malia, where personal recollection and expression take centre stage in One Grass Skirt to London.

Tippin'

Carl Allen

Putting the listener at the forefront of his vision, Carl Allen brings forth his new album featuring a chordless trio with bassist Christian McBride and saxophonist Chris Potter. Yearning for a natural and free-flowing recording process, Allen selected the tunes he believed best suited this chordless setup, also allowing each musician’s individual interpretation to shape the music.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Cosmic Seeds

Brown Spirits

The second album by Brown Spirits on Soul Jazz Records is a dynamic listen. Heavy on drums and guitar, raw sounding bass, funk infused Fender Rhodes, and synth grooves combine to create a psychedelic and cosmic soundscape. The Australian trio have worked hard to get a blend between krautrock and ambient jazz, and together this makes for hypnotic and immersive listening.

Available Format: CD

Ianchelevici

Flygmaskin

The music of the Flygmaskin duo meets the works of sculptor Ianchelevici. It was at a Belgian museum, whilst wandering for hours amongst these magnificent sculptures, that they conceived their music. Blending the electronic sounds of the keyboard against the accordion allows both players to explore within compositions, though this is contrasted on the track Felice, which is the duo’s take on classical composer Robert Schumann.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Young saxophonist Xhosa Cole releases his third album, celebrating the work and compositions of Thelonious Monk. Cole undertakes an inventive and creative approach to Monk’s compositions, including featuring American tap dancer (Liberty Styles) on 4 tracks, highlighting his roots to African dance. The closing track, Duke Ellington’s Come Sunday, is a stylistic conclusion to an album dedicated to friendship, joy and improvisation.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Malia’s new studio album “One Grass Skirt to London” takes the listener on a journey - Malia’s teenage journey from Malawi to London to be exact. Through 14 songs, we are transported through the memories that have remained significant in shaping her identity, and influenced her as an artist. With many recognisable tracks that have featured in films such as Top Gun, Fame, and Midnight Cowboy, this album is sure to impress with its soulful and intimate vocals.
