New Release Round-Up - 17th January 2025

by Maddy Allison

Jazz and folk collide this week in Fabienne Ambuehl's delightful second album, Thrive, and trumpet and saxophone come to the forefront in Benjamin Lackner's quintet album Spindrift. Icelandic bassist Gulli Gudmundsson brings us the album Flóð Og Fjara where trumpet and piano join him in musical dreamscapes, and Madre Tierra looks to the Polti family, headed up by guitarist Adrien Polti, to combine bass, guitar and cello in a contemporary sound. Finally, to round off this week's new releases, trumpeter Maik Krahl joins forces with a trio ensemble in The Magic of Consistency and Danish group, Oh People, demonstrate their love for all things jazz in Part Time Elegance

For her second album, Thrive, singer and pianist Fabienne Ambuehl solidifies her unique take on the jazz genre with influences from folk music. Subtle and yet vibrating with energy, Ambuehl has written original compositions that are full of imagination and creativity. Together, with her small ensemble, she crafts a lyrical and dynamic album, influenced by her love of poetry and her surroundings.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

With ensemble chemistry at the heart, Benjamin Lackner returns with a newly formed quintet. Made up exclusively of Lackner originals, save “Chambary”, which was written by his long-time friend and drummer Matthieu Chazarenc, Spindrift allows trumpet and saxophone to take the lead. Supported by a close ensemble, Lackner works to interweave melodic lines with a harmonious group sound.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Bassist Gulli Gudmundsson presents his new trio in Flóð Og Fjara, including pianist Jeroen van Vliet and trumpeter Koen Smits. Six of the nine original pieces are by the bassist, one by the pianist, one by the Spanish composer Federico Moreno Torroba, and one by the Icelandic composer Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson. With lyrical and melodic improvisation arcs, this trio embarks on a series of immersive and dream-like soundscapes.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

A family affair, the guitarist Adrien Polti recruits his nearest and dearest to feature on his album Madre Tierra. His son, Sébastien, is on electric bass and his daughter, Alma, is on cello to create a unique blend of contemporary and traditional. With Argentina at the heart of the recording, the Polti Trio put a spin on traditional tangos and waltzes, and the deep sweeping cello lines in dialogue with the bass in “Calliope” make for atmospheric and rich listening.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

German trumpeter Maik Krahl brings us his new album The Magic of Consistency, joined by a trio of saxophone, bass and drums. From emotive trumpet solos to technical and detailed passages, Krahl delivers an engaging line up of tracks fuelled by the idea of consistency. Full of melodic and soulful compositions, all by Krahl himself, this album features 12 new originals.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

April Records brings the debut release from Oh People, a quintet of the finest jazz musicians in Denmark. Part Time Elegance boasts energy and a love for jazz music, as well as taking inspiration from the likes of Duke Ellington and blending this with the more modern sounds of the genre. Though they shine as individual performers, the collective is at the heart of this album, where the tracks spin through swing, ballads and Latin grooves.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV
