 New Release Round-Up - 24th January 2025

by Maddy Allison

Famous for both his music as well as his acting on multiple comedic television programmes, Matt Berry returns to the former with the psychedelic Heard Noises; Jakob Dinesen reflects on a more peaceful world in Slow Flow, and François Couturier and Dominique Pifarély join forces in Songs and Preludes. Grammy-winner Nicole Zuraitis pays tribute to idols in siren songs volume 1, and drummers Steve Johns and Jacob Wutzke both deliver exciting new releases respectively with Mythology and You Better Bet

Driven by his dream of a peaceful world, saxophonist Jakob Dinesen releases his new album Slow Flow. Cello and djembe accompany keyboards and bass, with Dinesen on the tenor sax, in a vision to capture sounds from across the globe. Nine original contemporary compositions showcase these world-wide musical influences, as well as pay tribute to his own personal musical heroes.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Returning with his first solo album since 2021, multi-talented Matt Berry (known for his many iconic comedy roles on television) takes a break from the screen to return to music. Heard Noises delivers the soulful and psychedelic in an eclectic collection of original songs that capture the sound of the West Coast in the 60s. Playing most of the instruments himself, there’s no doubting this album is a testament to Berry’s musicianship, studio skills, and talent for songwriting.

Available Format: CD

French duo François Couturier and Dominique Pifarély are debuting their album, Songs and Preludes, after collaborating and performing on many projects together for many years. Both are pillars of French improvisation, and together they sensitively craft a programme of both the recognisable and the new. The violin and piano combination is sure to give familiar titles (from the likes of George Gershwin and Duke Ellington), a twist that reimagines tunes in a new light.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

A compilation of full of renowned songs, siren songs volume 1 is a tribute and celebration of female songwriters. Winning a Grammy for her LP How Love Begins, vocalist Nicole Zuraitis releases seven tracks for seven songwriters, each one completed in one take. Iconic melodies are given a fresh approach, with impromptu arrangements that capture both Zuraitis’ skill as a musician, and her love for the material she is performing.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Drummer, composer, author - Jacob Wutzke is a man of many talents. For his full length second album, Wutzke leads from the drummer’s chair in this quintet collection of 5 originals (by Wutzke), and 5 compositions by renowned drummer and composer Tony Williams. A contemporary album with the iconic sounds of Blue Note in the 50s and 60s at its heart, this Canadian drummer is certainly making waves with his new release.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

New York drummer Steve Johns makes his SteepleChase debut with Mythology, a compilation of original and classic compositions that are inspired by tales of ancient civilisations and legends. A quintet album, Johns is joined by piano, bass, guitar, as well as an interchangeable vibraphone and harmonica. Having won the award for Outstanding Drummer at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival whilst still a student, Mythology certainly showcases Johns' same dynamic talent and skill when it comes to performing.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV
