New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 21st February 2025by Maddy Allison An ambitious collection of new releases this week: BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Tom Smith releases his new big band album A Year in the Life, inspired by life in London, and Chuck Owen defies genre limitations in Magic Light. A collection of the best of Hazy Osterwald’s Sextett in Swiss Air! and film veteran Richard Baratta gives the 60s a Latin jazz kick with Looking Back. Finally, a grand-scale audio (and later visual) release from the fusion group Andorra with III, in their most adventurous project to date. Inspired by the exciting nature of London life, double BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist and saxophonist Tom Smith releases his new big band album A Year in the Life. Developed and recorded in just one year, Smith delivers nine original compositions that range from all out swing to funk and grooves. With a powerful and dynamic ensemble at his side, Smith certainly packs a punch. Chuck Owen traverses new paths in his new musical venture Magic Light alongside the ensemble ReSurgence. Electing for a slightly smaller ensemble than the big band set up he’s known for, Owen enlists the talents of vocalist Kate McGarry to scale across the blues, folk, classical, funk and swing in his brand new collection of original compositions. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV A blast from the past with this collection of the finest tunes by Hazy Osterwald in Swiss Air! Famous in Switzerland as a band leader, trumpeter and vibraphonist, Osterwald and his talented ensemble take you back to the classic jazz sound of the 30s and 40s. Familiar classics such as “Stompin at the Savoy” and “Honeysuckle Rose” are balanced by Osterwald originals such as “Swiss Air” in a nostalgic and swinging sextet album. Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV Whilst well-known for his illustrious film career, Richard Baratta demonstrates his long-established musical mettle in his new album, and proves just why he’s a Grammy nominee. Reshaping rock songs of the 60s with a Latin jazz spin, Baratta assembles an energetic ensemble to give classic songs a fresh and innovative twist whilst he leads from the drum chair in Looking Back. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV Presented by April Records, Andorra return for their new album III. Having met at Denmark’s Funen Music Conservatory, these five friends reunite to combine jazz and electronics together with a ‘modern vintage’ mindset. Full of dynamic grooves and a fusion sound, III is also an audio-visual adventure in the form of a concert-film. Streamed as a cinematic experience across Denmark, and later the world, Andorra’s new album promises to be their most ambitious project yet.
