New Release Round-Up - 7th March 2025

by Maddy Allison

Another week, another set of new releases! The Newcastle band Knats make their debut of the same name where the modern sounds of garage music meet the melodic and soulful sound of 70s jazz, and Alison Rayner returns with her live-recorded quintet album SEMA4. Charles Pasi makes his Blue Note return in Adamas and the Macondo Trio fuse African rhythms and jazz in Morayò. Finally, Folk Devils is now available for streaming and CD release by the saxophone-duo AuB, full of intricate melodies and technical improvisation.

On their much-anticipated debut album, Knats showcase their skill and ability to blend soulful grooves alongside a drum ‘n’ bass sound. Hailing from Newcastle, the best-friend duo Stan Woodward on bass and King David Ike Elechi on drums are joined by a series of talented musicians in their “Geordie-jazz” jazz debut.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Not intended for release, the new album from the Alison Rayner Quintet is an electric live concert recorded at the Vortex in London. After listening, the bassist and bandleader knew it had captured a special night of music. Full of original compositions, SEMA4 showcases the ensemble’s incredible dynamic when playing together, fusing sounds from across a variety of styles whilst doing it.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

The Blue Note singer and harmonicist is back with his sixth album, and third with Blue Note, Adamas. Acoustic, bluesy, and soulful, Charles Pasi is creating his own take on the jazz genre and adds a smooth yet colourful new album to his discography.

Available Format: CD

Blending jazz with African influences, this new release by the Macondo Trio puts rhythm front and centre, alongside modal melodies and deep grooves. Accompanied by vocalist Ghalia Benali, Morayò combines world music alongside jazz in an album that stems from collaboration and the musical energy that flows between each member of the ensemble.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Saxophone players Tom Barford and Alex Hitchcock reinvent the twin tenor line-up in their new album Folk Devils. Full of improvisation that draws on a shared sense of musical conversation between them, the saxophonists are joined by bass and drums, as well as electronics and synths. Responsible for the tracklist of original compositions, the pair - known collectively as AuB - put shared musical creativity and interplay at the heart of the album.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV
