New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 21st March 2025by Maddy Allison This week sees brand new releases from ECM with Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith joining forces for the free-form Defiant Life. Both keyboard and trumpet come together in an album that bears tribute to fallen figures and processes the duo's shared sense of sorrow at the world – but with hope for the future. A new blues album from Dutch artist Robbert Duijf crafts a fusion of gospel blues and Americana music for his third studio album, Silver Spoon. Dieter Ilg undertakes classical works of Handel and gives them a refreshing twist in Motherland and the new all-female saxophone ensemble The Empress capture that vintage sound in Square One. Finally, a Latin kick with The Mario Senge Group in their debut album Optimistic View, with plenty of sounds to get you in the mood for the warmer weather to come! A second ECM recording for the duo Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith in Defiant Life. Iyer’s keyboard and Smith’s trumpet join forces in a series of avant-garde sounding improvisations that process their sense of grief at the world’s cruelties but also the hope in humanity. Compositions, some of which are inspired by fallen influential figures (Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and Palestinian writer Rafaat Alareer), are free-flowing and rely on a musical dialogue full of sweeps and swells. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV Winner of the the European Blues Challenge 2024 and also of "Best Dutch Blues Album" in 2023, Robbert Duijf and his trio return in Silver Spoon.
