New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up - 21st March 2025

by Maddy Allison

This week sees brand new releases from ECM with Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith joining forces for the free-form Defiant Life. Both keyboard and trumpet come together in an album that bears tribute to fallen figures and processes the duo's shared sense of sorrow at the world – but with hope for the future. A new blues album from Dutch artist Robbert Duijf crafts a fusion of gospel blues and Americana music for his third studio album, Silver Spoon. Dieter Ilg undertakes classical works of Handel and gives them a refreshing twist in Motherland and the new all-female saxophone ensemble The Empress capture that vintage sound in Square One. Finally, a Latin kick with The Mario Senge Group in their debut album Optimistic View, with plenty of sounds to get you in the mood for the warmer weather to come!

A second ECM recording for the duo Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith in Defiant Life. Iyer’s keyboard and Smith’s trumpet join forces in a series of avant-garde sounding improvisations that process their sense of grief at the world’s cruelties but also the hope in humanity. Compositions, some of which are inspired by fallen influential figures (Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and Palestinian writer Rafaat Alareer), are free-flowing and rely on a musical dialogue full of sweeps and swells.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Winner of the the European Blues Challenge 2024 and also of "Best Dutch Blues Album" in 2023, Robbert Duijf and his trio return in Silver Spoon. In his third studio album, Duijf is full of that gospel sound, with a dash of Americana to boot. Lamenting vocals fuelled with passion, Duijf looks to tell stories with the songs on this album and connect to his audience through heartfelt lyrics and sincerity.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Double bassist Dieter Ilg releases his new album Motherland, a tribute to both Mother Earth as well as his homeland of Germany. Joined by his long-standing collaborators Rainer Bohm on piano and French drummer Patrice Heral, as well as Till Bronner on trumpet and flugelhorn, the album features reinterpretations of classical pieces: Handel’s ‘Minuet’ from Water Music and ‘Glorious’ from Alexander’s Feast.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Pureum Jin, saxophonist, assembles New York’s most up and coming female saxophonists in her new ensemble The Empress. The ensemble includes two-time Grammy Award-winning baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian (also a production advisor for the album), rising star Erena Terakubo, and genre-defying Chelsea Baratz. Wonderfully energetic and full of life, the group undertake compositions from Gershwin to Coltrane in their debut album Square One.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

The Mario Senge Group’s main mission is to make music that moves (minds and bodies alike). The ensemble is made up of guitar, vocals, saxophone/flute and a rhythm section, bursting with Latin jazz and fusion influences. Full of original compositions, their debut album Optimistic View balances rhythm, unlikely harmonic shifts and spirited solos.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV
