New Release Round-up,New Release Round-Up -11th April 2025

by Maddy Allison

This week, Savina Yannatou explores the element of water in her new album with ECM, joined by Tunisian singer Lamia Bedioui and the Primavera en Salonico ensemble. From traditional melodies across the globe to Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the Greek singer blends a variety of cultures and sounds in the stylistic Watersong. The ensemble Enemy celebrate their decade of music-making together in their live album Fiend and pianist Gerald Clayton gets experimental with turntablism in Ones & Twos where Side A and B can be seamlessly played side by side. Life Forms sees Niran Dasika take his loves of sci-fi and innovative approaches to trumpet playing to new heights, and the Kwashibu Area Band undertake a blend of styles in Love Warrior’s Anthem whilst still keeping their Ghanaian roots.

Greek singer Savina Yannatou’s fifth ECM album explores the theme of water, capturing its dual nature as a source of life and also of destruction. Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Yannatou weaves together a rich tapestry of cultural influences and features Tunisian singer Lamia Bedioui, whose voice beautifully complements Yannatou’s in an interplay of Arabic and Mediterranean sounds. Blending traditional songs like “Wade in the Water” with free improvisations, Yannatou’s evocative vocals are supported by the Primavera en Salonico ensemble in a mix of classical, folk, and experimental sounds.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Enemy’s fourth live album celebrates a decade of musical partnership between pianist Kit Downes, bassist Petter Eldh, and drummer James Maddren. Recorded during a two-day residency at Bird’s Eye in Basel, this album blends retrospective tracks with new material and showcases the trio’s evolution, hinting to the sound of 90s studio jazz. Known for their mastery of polyrhythms and collective improvisation, Enemy effortlessly shifts between themes, creating an interplay that balances intensity with subtlety.

In a release inspired by turntablism, the pianist and composer Gerald Clayton produces his third Blue Note album. Clayton designed the album with a unique intent: that Side A can be played alongside Side B seamlessly, mirroring a DJ overlapping two tracks within a set. Clayton is joined by vibraphonist Joel Ross, flutist Elena Pinderhughes, trumpeter Marquis Hill and drummer Kendrick Scott in the experimental Ones and Twos.

Multi-award-winning Melbourne trumpeter Niran Dasika presents his new minimalist album, featuring pianist Andrea Keller and double bassist Helen Svoboda. The album reflects Dasika’s fascination with trumpet techniques and each track is imagined as a distinct "life form" (influenced by his love of fantasy and science fiction). The intimate recording process, captured in a single room with binaural microphones, amplifies every detail of the trio's interplay. Dasika's new release promises to be a deep and vibrant sonic journey explored through creative and improvisatory soundscapes.

Available Format: CD

Kwashibu Area Band returns with their latest album, marking a bold evolution in their sound. Known for their Ghanaian Highlife roots, the band steps into a more introspective and nuanced direction with this release, blending jazz, reggae, and dub influences while still honouring their traditional Ghanaian roots. This marks their first standalone project, offering a softer, more reflective approach compared to their previous albums with Pat Thomas. The album explores a jazz-influenced take on Highlife, with tracks ranging from danceable rhythms to meditative pieces and features the mixed media artwork Anansi’s Dance by Zak Ové.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV
