Fontana Records has been founded in early 50s by Dutch electronics producer Phillips. From early 60's Fontana British division was the UK licensee for Motown,Columbia,Epic,Vanguard,Mainstream and ESP-Disk.

In mid 60s producer Alan Bates released series of avant-garde jazz albums with Dutch designer Marte Röling covers art (so-called "Fontana Marte Röling Series"). Containing some early (1962-66) recorded avant-garde music from leading jazz artists, these 16 albums collection is known and popular between collectors not only because of music, but for their cover art as well. All albums have been released by Dutch Fontana with bigger part of them reissued by UK Fontana division as well (few original Dutch "Portraits" series albums have been release in UK with alternate cover art)
