BTW, I didn't know where to place this, but I think it deserves better than the "just for fun" section

Maybe the general polls section...(now that I think about itEmbarrassed)

GD is fine, how we would convert such questions into a poll anyway...

What is your first musical memory/souvenir (other than mommy's lullabies)?

Souvenir sounds ambiguous to me, besides dad's collection was already in the house. So I'll stick to the memories: if I take in account all the MTV hits I headbanged or mop-guitared on when I was three, it could be anything from R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People", Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)", Michael Jackson's "Black or White", a catchy tune with two saxophonists swinging their instruments I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT'S CALLED AAARGH or even Metallica's "Enter Sandman" or Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". But if we're talking solid records, then either Vivaldi's Seasons or Mussorgsky's Pictures (also around the age of 3, but I would spin the latter vinyl every day at least until I was 6).

Which official masterpiece bugs you beyond belief?

Hope I'm understanding this correctly and not just being spiteful towards Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto, Tschaikovsky's First or Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

Which "universal classic" album haven't you heard yet?

Still a lot of jazz to hear. Depends what makes it "universally" classic (especially from you, Hugues Tongue). Otherwise, I'd have to hear people mention something so to smack me for not hearing it yet - I think I have listened at least to that much music. I occasionally (especially on trips) indulge in more mainstream music. I haven't looked into punk that much. So... I don't know, London Calling by the Clash? There ya go.

Which generally-regarded as turd album do you actually like?

I don't know, name some. Tongue

An album that everybody else seems to hate and that you actually like?

Vangelis' Beaubourg. You all be crazy.

Which turd would you play over and over to your enemy to torture him?

Coltrane's Olatunji.

An album that you'd love to make the whole planet discover?

I don't want anyone to discover something through me. Every time I recommended a piece of music I was crazy about, I became less crazy about it the instant the other person started sharing my enthusiasm.

An album you could re-listen to every day?

My usual favourites, but I wouldn't do that anyway, because I pathologically get bored by everything after a while, especially by overdoing it.

An album or piece to listen to understand an essential aspect of your personality?

Claude Debussy's Prelude Des pas sur la neige.

Which piece/album influenced your life?

Currently, Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto and Bartok's Piano Sonata, opening me to an immensity of modern music. I managed so far to interpret the latter myself up to a certain standard, now I'm climbing the Everest with the other one.

Which album or piece had you growing a tear or depresses you?

Sigur Ros' ( ), Schnittke's Viola Concerto.

Which piece of music gave you your most powerful erotic emotion?

Gave me what now? O_o

A desert-island album?

I already am on an island.

If you could bring back (to life) a musician, it would be??

Wouldn't.

If you could bring back a composer, it would be?

Idem.

Give an example of "intelligent" music.

Sure, ask the hedonist... (a tip?)

Which is your favourite musician still alive today?

Laurier Anderson, Keith Jarrett, Klaus Schulze, Murray Perahia

Which is your favourite composer still alive today?

Doina Rotaru

Which idea or concept would you like to see adapted musically??

More cowbell.

Ooo...fun. And thanks for the lack of yellow! Tongue

What is your first musical memory/souvenir (other than mommy's lullabies)?

Oh boy. Hmm...well if we are talking beyond listening to music...I remember once when I was in third grade I believe, they brought all the 3rd grade classes together in the lunch room and had a man with an array of instruments behind him. He was there to encourage us youngins to join the band of the school (which you could once you were in fourth grade). Thus, he gave a lecture/demonstration of all the type of instruments they had in the school (concert) band..trumpet, saxophones, flute, drums/percussions, etc. Gotta say, I was pretty damn fasinated with it all. Especially the sax. So I decided to try my hand at it all. Sadly, my fingers were too short/stubby to reach all the keys correctly at the time Embarrassed so I quickly switched to drums and continued in school bands throughout high school.

If we are talking listening to music...probably listening to some of my dad's CD in the living room while playing some silly games to the music. I specifically remember a Moody Blues best of album being the highlight. I didn't have a CD of my own til I was like 14 if not older.

Which official masterpiece bugs you beyond belief?

I'll take 'bugs you beyond belief' to mean 'you don't like'. And my answer will be Davis' Bitches Brew. I know it's a classic but whew...I don't enjoy listening to it.

Perhaps Yes' Close To The Edge is a better answer...being it is much more of a frustrating album. The title track is brilliant but the remaining two are quite a bit less than brilliant. I suppose I can say a similar thing about Genesis' Selling England....when it's good it's brilliant...but then it has that middle bit which is a snoozefest and quite annoying as it kind of ruins the mood of the album for me.

Which "universal classic" album haven't you heard yet?

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue

I know...I'm Cool

Which generally-regarded as turd album do you actually like?

Hmm....this is more difficult.

Idk how turdy this album is considered as a whole (away from PA I mean) but I quite enjoy Frank Zappa's Civilization Phase III, which if I remember corretly is rated pretty low at PA (of course, it's not a  rock album in any way, so that may influence something). But it's the only thing I can think of.

An album that everybody else seems to hate and that you actually like?

Isn't this more or less the same question as the previous?

But, I guess, I'll answer with Capt. Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica. Not that everyone else seems to hate it, but it is one of those classic examples of love or hate, and I fall on the love side.

Which turd would you play over and over to your enemy to torture him?

Haha.

Ronald Reagan - Speaks Out Agasint Socialized Medicine Wink

An album that you'd love to make the whole planet discover?

Hmm...idk. I'll say Agalloch's The Mantle, as I find it to be one of the best albums I've listened to, all things considered.

An album you could re-listen to every day?

I don't think I could listen to any album every day without getting sick of it.

I'll cheat and say Ulver's A Quick Fix Of Melancholy EP...because it's rather short. Tongue

An album or piece to listen to understand an essential aspect of your personality?

Wow. That's difficult.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just too young to know who I am.

Which piece/album influenced your life?

The most influencial album for me was King Crimson's Discpline. My first prog album (aside from some Pink Floyd songs and the Yes hits that get played on classic rock radio) that really opened the doors for me to enjoy music as a whole beyond either background noise or a once and a-while escape from the real world. I'm sure it helped that it was the most out there thing I listened to at the time as well.

Which album or piece had you growing a tear or depresses you?

A couple of pieces I'll mention...
Van Der Graaf Generator - Lost
VDGG - My Room (Waiting For Wonderland)
Porcupine Tree - Feel So Low
Agalloch - A Desloation Song

As for an album...VDGG - Godbluff, for I will forever associate it with a better time in my life.

Which piece of music gave you your most powerful erotic emotion?

Lol. I assume this question sounds better in French. Tongue

As much as I like to joke that certain songs/albums give me erections or eargasms it never actually happens in a most powerful erotic way.

A desert-island album?

VDGG - H To He, Who Am The Only One

Which future album are you most waiting most?

Hmm...good question.

I'll say...Thinking Plague's next album. (Though there is probably a better answer to this...can't find my list of albums that are coming out in the future atm.)

If you could bring back (to life) a musician, it would be??

Frank Zappa

If you could bring back a composer, it would be?

I could answer the same.

But, in the spirit of the quiz...Arnold Schoenberg

Give an example of "intelligent" music

Jazz, classical, and the avant-garde are certainly where most of the cerebralness in music is, these days espeically. Something like prog is good too as it's a nice merging of the two ends of the specturm. (meaning more of the style of prog-rock). And any type of music that stresses the music and the the shattering of boundaries/streching what can be done within them.

Which is your favourite musician still alive today?

Tough.

I'll say Peter Hammill.

Which is your favourite composer still alive today?

Steve Reich.

Which idea or concept would you like to see adapted musically??

That more music would be indeed about the music, and not lyrics/selling albums/style/etc.

Apologies for just the slight amount of jazz in my answers. Tongue

What is your first musical memory/souvenir (other than mommy's lullabies)?

I have no memory of my mother's lullabies.  Two musical memories stick with me and one is still a mystery.  Mystery solved was Greig's Peer Gynt Suite No 1 -a.  It had been lodged in my memory ever since I first heard it.  As I recall it was on one of those kiddie "TV" with a record player on top that had a filmstrip.  May have been a Viewmaster thing.  Whatever the slide show that it was an accompaniment to, I don't remember.  The other thing may be an imaginary memory.  It was a record that had this chunky spiral design on the label and the music was rather percussive and kind of angular like the label.  My parents had a console stereo unit for as long as I can remember, but it was for a bunch of easy listening and christmas music albums.

First souvenir would be a ticket stub from my first prog concert: Kansas.

Which official masterpiece bugs you beyond belief?

Not a single one.  Perhaps I'm not listening to the right wrong stuff.

Which "universal classic" album haven't you heard yet?

What's the difference between apathy and ignorance?  Don't know and don't care.  I will say that I gave Supertramp's Crime Of The Century a try on a lark thanks to PA.  Rather like it.

What is your first musical memory/souvenir (other than mommy's lullabies)?

One of those kiddie singers that I can't remember the name of.

Which official masterpiece bugs you beyond belief?

Well in Prog You by Gong. In Jazz, I tend to like all of them, although most big band stuff is annoying to me, so any of those "masterpieces"

Which "universal classic" album haven't you heard yet?

Blue Train by John Coltrane

Which generally-regarded as turd album do you actually like?

Well to some, Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater LOL, although a number of people like that so that doesn't qualify... hm... the only thing I can think of is Scarsick by Pain of Salvation

An album that everybody else seems to hate and that you actually like?

Isn't this the same question as above?

Which turd would you play over and over to your enemy to torture him?

Um... worst albums I've ever heard are probably The Problem of Pain Part 1 by Torman Maxt and The Dream Sequencer by Ayreon, so I guess those. Most jazz albums I heard are good LOL

An album that you'd love to make the whole planet discover?

Part the Second by maudlin of the Well. I would say Scenes from a Memory, but it's already rather popular.

An album you could re-listen to every day?

Both albums mentioned above LOL

An album or piece to listen to understand an essential aspect of your personality?

Again, I'm a terrible fanboy, but Scenes from a Memory again

Which piece/album influenced your life?

Yet again^

Which album or piece had you growing a tear or depresses you?

Well Part the Second is so striking beautiful that I tear up, but out of joy LOL

I try to steer away from the depressing stuff, though. Although Gloomy Sunday is pretty damn sad (by Rezso Seress)

Which piece of music gave you your most powerful erotic emotion?

Er, I guess Home off Scenes from a Memory LOL

A desert-island album?

Um.. Scenes from a Memory

Which future album are you most waiting most?

I'd say Opeth or Dream Theater new albums.

If you could bring back (to life) a musician, it would be??

Zappa

If you could bring back a composer, it would be?

Aaron Copland

Give an example of "intelligent" music

Pretty much all of prog. I'd say Supper's Ready by Genesis, I guess.

Which is your favourite musician still alive today?

Mike Akerfeldt, currently

Which is your favourite composer still alive today?

I'm assuming you don't mean classical, because not many of the good ones are still alive, if any. For rock/jazz, I'd say Pat Metheny, seeing as most of my favorite bands are just that, bands.

Which idea or concept would you like to see adapted musically??

I think Objectivism or Solipsism would be interesting to see musically

Yes, I am a Dream Theater fanboy. Don't make fun of me LOL

Great idea, Sean. Will give this a shot - straining my memory and my ability to split hairs on some of these Wink

What is your first musical memory/souvenir (other than mommy's lullabies)?

Earliest souvenir for me, as my memory is not the greatest, would be a toy (plastic) guitar with very crappy nylon strings. I think it was light blue.

Which official masterpiece bugs you beyond belief?

Not going to say it bugs me, as th album itself is great. But as I don't feel it is the band's best work (by far) I must say 'Sg Pepper's.'

Which "universal classic" album haven't you heard yet?

One that I can think of would be Jethro Tull's 'Thick as a Brick'. Which is odd, because I am a fan.

Which generally-regarded as turd album do you actually like?

Let me get back to you, gotta have a think.

An album that everybody else seems to hate and that you actually like?

I know people give ELO a hard time, especially for their disco-influenced era, but I do enjoy 'Discovery.' I feel a little guilty just writing it.

Which turd would you play over and over to your enemy to torture him?

Assuming my enemy is a not a house-msuic fan, something from the Ministry of Sound's 'Sessions' series.

An album that you'd love to make the whole planet discover?

Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' - it's got a clear message, presented so very beautifully.

An album you could re-listen to every day?

KOB

An album or piece to listen to understand an essential aspect of your personality?

Mr Bungle's 'California' (for its eclectism - which is probably way too prentious a thing to say, as I'm not really all that eclectic.)

Which piece/album influenced your life?

Led Zeppelin's first. Made me want to be a singer. Which I sucked at.

Which album or piece had you growing a tear or depresses you?

Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel. (Still a beautiful piece but)

Which piece of music gave you your most powerful erotic emotion?

Probably something in the funk realm.

A desert-island album?

At this moment, probably 'Led Zeppelin IV' but I'd be tempted to go for a someone's double-album too.

Which future album are you most waiting most?

The new Opeth.

If you could bring back (to life) a musician, it would be??

Jim Morrison, so I could ask him to grow up. (And I am a Doors fan.)

If you could bring back a composer, it would be?

Rachmaninov, so he could show us all the meaning of 'heavy' in a live setting.

Give an example of "intelligent" music

Anything that makes me want to hear it more than once.

Which is your favourite musician still alive today?

Herbie Hancock.

Which is your favourite composer still alive today?

Herbie Hancock.

Which idea or concept would you like to see adapted musically??

I'm going to twist this and say a book - I'd love to see someone try and adapt 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' by Harkui Murakami.
We are men of action. Lies do not become us.

OK, fine to throw a challenge to everyone, but I'm also bound to it. Wink

What is your first musical memory/souvenir (other than mommy's lullabies)?
- Tull's Bourée, Jacques Brel and La Baleine Bleue from Steven Warring (an American singer for kids based in France)

Which official masterpiece bugs you beyond belief?
- anything from Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and David Bowie

Which "universal classic" album haven't you heard yet?
- Kuti (father & son alike)

Which generally-regarded as turd album do you actually like?
- I don't believe I have "guilty pleasures" in music, but in the spirit of the quizz, Chic - C'est Chic >> some killer funk on there!!

An album that everybody else seems to hate and that you actually like?
- Anvil's debut, Hard & heavy... a juicy piece of sleaze rock.

Which turd would you play over and over to your enemy to torture him?
- daft punk or any other kind of techno... but if he's my ennemy, he's probably an idiot, so he'll probably like my torture.

An album that you'd love to make the whole planet discover?
- First Utterances from Comus or Mice And Rats In The Loft from Jan Dukes De Grey,
- Darius from Graham Collier Music.
- Better known (but still not enough IMHO): Caravanserai from Santana

An album you could re-listen to every day?
- maybe A Love Supreme (Coltrane) or Ptah The El Daoud (Alice), but I'd be scared to get sick of it.

An album or piece to listen to understand an essential aspect of your personality?
- Crime Of The Century - Supertramp ... and Jacques Brel in général

Which piece/album influenced your life?
- Dark Side Of The Moon et Animals (Pink Floyd), Thick As A Brick (J Tull) >> the lyrics.

Which album or piece had you growing a tear or depresses you?
- Promenade Au Fond D'un Canal - Present, Rock Bottom - Robert Wyatt and Schubert's string quintet (forget it's full name)

Which piece of music gave you your most powerful erotic emotion?
Nights In White Satin and Whiter Shade Of Pale >> the boners I had while squeezing my mates in dancing these slows >> Sade's music as well (the group, not Le Divin Marquis)

A desert-island album?
- no electricity on a desert island, so I'll take a guitar (acoustic of course)  >> it's a cop-out, I know, but I hate these desert-island lists

Which future album are you most waiting most?
- pffff!!!! The previous one, maybe?? (another cop-out, but it's part of the quizz)

If you could bring back (to life) a musician, it would be??
- Le Grand Jacques (Brel)

If you could bring back a composer, it would be?
- Coltrane (husband and wife)

Give an example of "intelligent" music
- Anything that makes me want to hear it more than once,
- but in the spirit of the quizz, the stupendous British-jazz album Song Without Words from Chris Spedding - which he actually completely disowns >> he prefers playing rockabilly

Which is your favourite musician still alive today?
- McCoy Tyner, maybe??

Which is your favourite composer still alive today?

Edith Piaf - Hymne de l'amour (pardon my spelling!)

None, although the over usage of the word "progressive" and "prog" in a certain board bugs me. It's too pop'y for me!

Good question ... I've heard so many I'm not sure which ones I've missed.

None really.

I would have to check my list ... but Amon Duul 2 comes to mind, in the lack of understanding as to what music is all about and how music can be a vehicle for some serious expression instead of a commercial sound.

"Swastika Girls" ... until they start appreciating what became known as something else is also very progressive and nice! You already know what album that is from!!!

Amon Duul 2 - Wolf City ... but before we do that we have to de-sensitize people from listening to too much elevator music and commercial music!

All of them ... I wouldn't have them if I couldn't!

Any Peter Hammill piece of work, and ending with "A Way Out" ... so you know what I mean.

All of them and none of them. I was already into and studying mysticism to the point where I knew the trappings of "success" and "commerciality" in order to learn something inside.

Best line I ever learned something from was actually a Carlos Castaneda novel ... the day you stop listening to everything, including me, you will know much better who you are ... and I knew right away that the drugs were not necessary and were there because Carlos was a tough and stubborn mamma! And don Juan said so 7 books later.

Doesn't depress me ... but I still love Sandy Denny's work and voice with all my heart. You must listen to the Remastered "Rising for the Moon" and make sure you listen to the two versions of "One More Chance" ... I can't help crying on it, because it is as if she is asking for a chance, that she already knows she is not going to get!

None. Over rated and sad question!

None or all of them!

None, or any.

I'll only answer this if I can have 2 of them ... Sandy Denny and Michael Karoli

All of them, or none.

No such thing.

Too many to mention. I appreciate too many of them and their abilities and love.

Too many of them and all of the music has composers ... so in that sense all of them.

None. I like it when the arts surprise us.

... And then one day, the prophet said that you and I would know what is art ... and real!
