Can anyone share anecdotes about jazz musicians in jail, or recommend a book / other source?

I don't know any stories, but many jazz musicians went to jail for heroin, especially in the 50s. You might want to look into the life of Art Pepper, and other musicians he was with. Sometimes the jails back then had fairly good jazz bands.
Usual racial prejudice also gets musicians in trouble with the law. There is Miles' famous fight with a cop who was harassing him in Boston. There are also things musicians did to stay out of jail, such as Red Rodney pretending to be albino so that Charley Parker's band wouldn't be jailed in the south for being racially integrated.
